Dec. 7, 2008 — A day that will live in infamy for Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer
PALMER SET SIGHTS
ON DEC. 7 AS THE DAY
HE’LL TEST HIS ELBOW
Good for Carson Palmer.
The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback finally came clean on Monday, Nov. 24, revealing details of his elbow injury never heard before — by the media, anyway.
Palmer has targeted Dec. 7, 2008, as the day he’ll start throwing again, but said surgery on his right elbow remains a possibility because the ligament and tendon are detached from the bone.
Palmer’s condition is improving. He can tell because he’s gaining strength in his elbow. His pain threshold has also increased and he’s able to do more arm and elbow exercises.
Why Dec. 7? Because doctors believe the ligament and tendon will have re-attached on their own by then.
The Bengals will be in Indianapolis on Dec. 7 for a game against the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Palmer won’t play IN the game. But he could throw ON the sideline and in pre-game warmups.
If the elbow holds up, he won’t need surgery.
If it doesn’t, he’ll undergo an operation.
Fans need to remember: Surgery is ALWAYS the last-case scenario. And if he has surgery, he likely won’t be ready until training camp.
IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE 2009 NFL DRAFT, THE BENGALS SELECT …
University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
BENGALS ROSTER MOVES:
GEATHERS & RUCKER TO IR,
PAIR OF FORMER SEC STUDS
MALLARD, MATHIS ARE THE
NEWEST ROSTER ADDITIONS
It turns out that injuries suffered by defensive ends Robert Geathers (knee) and Frostee Rucker (hamstring) at Pittsburgh on Thursday night were severe enough to end their seasons.
Both were placed on Injured Reserve on Monday, Nov. 24, leaving the defensive line dangerously thin with five games remaining.
To bolter the depth on both injury-riddled lines, the club signed a pair of fourth-year journeymen from the Southeastern Conference in defensive end Josh Mallard (Georgia) and guard Evan Mathis (Alabama).
Mallard (6-2, 265) played in 11 games last season, splitting time with Atlanta (3) and Denver (8), and posting 20 tackles with 3.5 sacks.
He entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick of Indianapolis in 2002. His career NFL totals include 48 tackles, 8.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and three pass deflections in 38 games with one start,
Mathis (6-5, 304) is needed because of injuries to starting left guard Andrew Whitworth (ankle) and backup guard-tackle Scott Kooistra (knee).
Mathis played in Games 2-8 this year for Miami, but was waived by the Dolphins on Nov. 7. He entered the NFL as a third-round draft choice of Carolina in 2005, playing in 25 games with 15 starts from 2005-07. The Panthers waived him on Aug. 30, 2008.

Even though we may not need a QB, I’ll take Tebow in a heartbeat. New direction - new mindset - let Carson go to greener pastures. If the Bengals have to pay top 5 money, might as well get value for your buck. A possible Farve/Rodgers senario while the Bengals form a new identity.By Carol

Palmer isn’t hurt. He just doesn’t want to play. And he won’t play again this season. Take my word.By Brian

Yeah, that’s it Carol. Carson doesn’t want to play. It’s fans like you that give us Bengal fans a bad rep. You’re uninformed, clueless and only crawl out of your trailer to spout off idiotic comments. Go follow the Browns or Steelers, you’ll fit right in with their fans.By John

Now we know as PH would say, “The Rest of the Story”. There is no sense for CP to even try to play anytime, ‘till the OL can stop leaking.By Derrick

It bothers me that Palmer would try to throw so soon. If the tendon and ligament are actually in the process of reattaching, they can’t possibly be as strong as they would be by next spring. Another example of stupid handling of an injury by the Bengals.By biff garbonzo

Tebow is a nice college QB but I doubt he is chosen in the first round. He doesn’t have an NFL arm. I say make a deal for Vince Young of Tennessee. Sure, he is a head case but maybe they can catch lightning.By Chick Ludwig

Hey Biff: Don’t make me laugh — uncontrollably. Tim Tebow IS a first-round draft pick. I don’t give a darn about his arm strength. QBs are measured by Ws and Ls. Tebow is a leader…and a winner. Amen. Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog. ChickBy Big Burrito

Chick, dont blame Biff he’s been mad ever since Marty Mcfly showed him up in Back to the Future. Tell me this what about Tebow as a running back in the NFL? Dosent he remind you of a quarterback from BYU? Steve Young? He was recruited by several DIV I schools to play running back or D-back. I dont know about the rest of the Bengal fans but I would take a Tim Tebow and of course I agree DL/OL is a huge concern. Thanks for the great reads Chick!By Big Burrito

I keep telling myself, only hit the button once! It’s like Levi Jones he just cant help but move before the ball is snapped at least once a game.By John

I don’t think it matters who the Bengals QB is if the OL can’t protect him. PB never picked an early round QB, it seems he wanted people who could block the QB from the onslaught.
