LB Hodge called up; CB Castille is out

CASTILLE ‘KNIFED’

IN FAVOR OF THE

VETERAN HODGE

It’s a brutal business, the NFL.

If Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Simeon Castille didn’t know it before, he knows it now.

Castille, the non-drafted rookie free agent from Alabama, got waived on Friday, Oct. 3, when the Bengals decided to promote veteran linebacker Abdul Hodge off the practice squad.

Hodge (6-0, 236), a third-year player from Iowa, is expected to pack a punch in coverage on special teams.

Hodge entered the NFL in 2006 as a third-round draft choice of Green Bay.

He played in eight Packers games in ’06 and was on Green Bay’s Reserve/Injured list (knee) last season.

He played in all four Packers 2008 preseason games (20 tackles) and was waived by Green Bay on Sept. 1. He was signed to Cincinnati’s practice squad on Sept. 16.

Castille, the son of former Tampa Bay and Denver cornerback Jeremiah Castille, played in Games 1-4 this season, posting six tackles in limited action.

Can Bengals pull off an upset?

TOO MANY PROBLEMS

PLAGUE THE BENGALS

===Back to the original question: Can Cincy shock the NFL world and upset the Cowboys?===

Not with an offensive line that can’t block a soul. It’s the most disappointing unit on the team.

Not with a tailback (Chris Perry) who can’t hold onto the football. He has four fumbles (two lost).

Not with a quarterback (Carson Palmer) who has an inflamed right elbow. He’ll test his arm strength today, Friday, Oct. 3. The choice between Palmer and backup Ryan Fitzpatrick could be a game-time decision.

Not with a wide receiver (Chad Ocho Cinco) who has an ego that’s run amok. His stuff has worn so thin that it’s not even “bulletin board” material anymore.

Not with a defense that’s a work in progress. Coordinator Mike Zimmer’s doing a heckuva job, considering he has very little talent to work with.

The difference between the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals isn’t just talent, it’s the expectation level. The Cowboys lose ONE game, and it’s Armageddon. The Bengals lose, lose and lose some more, and it’s business as usual.

The Bengals WANT to be competitive. The Cowboys EXPECT to win the Super Bowl.

Nuff said.

Fulmer, Leach top ‘The Chickster’s’ list of overrated, underrated college FB coaches

FULMER WILL BE LUCKY

TO SURVIVE ‘08 SEASON

LEACH, ‘FRIDGE,’ HOKE

BREATHS OF FRESH AIR

===LUDWIG AT LARGE isn’t afraid to spank Tressel, Weis, Carroll & Bowden; Ty Willingham got a raw deal at Notre Dame, a mediocre program that masquerades as a national power. Instead of joining the Big East or Big Ten in football — like it should — ND is a King Midas cash cow that hordes NBC’s money for its-own-selfish-self.===

OVERRATED

Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee — Recruits great talent that never measures up to the hype.

Jim Tressel, Ohio State — Too conservative. Plays games too close to the (sweater) vest.

Pete Carroll, USC — With all that talent, he should have way more than 2 national titles.

Charlie Weis, Notre Dame — His ego and arrogance run stride for stride to a photo finish.

Bobby Bowden, Florida State — Program has fallen off map in nation’s weakest FB conference.

UNDERRATED

Mike Leach, Texas Tech — Most refreshing face (and breath of fresh air) in college football.

Ralph Friedgen, Maryland — “The Fridge” is large & lovable, letting fly some Yogi Berra-isms.

Brady Hoke, Ball State — Kettering, Ohio, Fairmont East grad (Class of ‘77) has Cards chirpin’.

Tyrone Willingham, Washington — A classy guy who didn’t deserve the “knife” at Notre Dame.

Houston Nutt, OleMiss — Anybody who goes into “The Swamp” and survives gets my vote.
