XU Club Football — UNLEASHED!
XAVIER UNIVERSITY
CLUB FOOTBALL TEAM
OCCUPIES ‘TABLE ONE’
IN THE CHICKSTER’S HEART
SEASON KICKS OFF MONDAY
VS. MSJ AT WITHROW H.S. (7 P.M.)
===The Xavier University Club Football Team seeks a home on the AM or FM radio dial to call its own. Radio station GMs, program directors and producers, please listen up: Here’s your chance to land a quality product with a proud, loyal and intense following that will bring positive ratings to your station and some cash to your pocket. Interested? Contact XU head football coach Tom “Tower Of” Powers Jr. at this E-mail address: tepowersjr@yahoo.com===
LUDWIG AT LARGE salutes Tom “Tower of” Powers Jr., (Villanova, ‘81), head coach of the Xavier University Club Football Team. The Musketeers open the 2008 season against the College of Mount Saint Joseph Junior Varsity on Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at Withrow High School in Cincinnati.
Talk about a bang for your buck, how does this sound? Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for students and free to XU students with a school ID.
Oct. 11 is circled on my calendar because that’s the day the Muskies invade Jefferson City, Mo., for a 2 p.m. game against the Blue Tigers of Lincoln University, coached by My Main Man, the immortal Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Leapin’ Lemar Parrish.
Xavier football will always have a seat at Table One in The Chickster’s heart.
As a growing up in Price Hill on Cincinnati’s West Side, I was a member of the Musketeer Club. Five bucks got me a season pass, and the honor of watching Xavier beat Dayton once upon a time with 12 Musketeers on the field.
I remember two great coaches, the Flyers’ John McVey and the Muskies’ Ed Biles, going to battle. And who can forget those Saturday night games against the Quantico Marines? Now THAT was fun.
And the names — wide receiver Danny Abramowicz, tailback Billy Waller, right guard John Shinners, quarterbacks Carroll Williams and Jerry Buckmaster, and offensive tackle Ken Blackwell — will always be magic to me.
If you remember the good ol’ days of football along Victory Parkway, then you’ll come out and support the Xavier Club Football Team. The Musketeers didn’t just dream of a football renaissance. They made a resurrection a reality.

Kicking it old school Chick. I’ve always remembered a XU Qunatico game I saw probably 35 yrs ago as a Boy Scout. Had no idea at the time what a Quantico even was; just remember they destroyed X and a X punt that lost 15 yards. Punter kicked it straight up and when it landed bounced backwards 15 yards. Have always wished to see it happen again. Sadly the closest I’ve seen since was the famous Dick Lebeau “pooch punt” ah the memories.By Aaron Szabo

Chick as long as you are getting nostalgic about the old Xavier football program, do you remember the GCL doubleheaders they used to have over there once a year? I was there once when Bacon took care of Moeller about 45-0. That was probably Moeller’s first year as a school. Since then though Moeller has paid back Bacon handsomely in defeats.By XUFAN

I remember going to the XU Football games as a child. I will never forget the atmosphere and the smell of hotdogs! That was a beautiful stadium which Notre Dame’s Knute Rockne helped raise funds to build. It was a sad day when the administration demolished it in secrecy when all the students were gone for the summer. They knew the students who wanted football to come back would have protested.By Kevin Donovan

Chick: Grew up on the west side; one of ten. Son of a Xavier grad who played freshman football at Xavier before th war; uncle, Joe King, a tackle, is a member of Xavier legion of Honor. All 10 of my siblings were members of the Junior Musketeer Club and we sat in the north end zone for many games. Dan Abramowicz, Carroll Williams, Walt Mainer, Billy Waller, Jim Louder, Steve Bailey, Denny Caponi, Bill Howe, Bob Reis, Tim Dydo, Rich Kase and others. Wonderful memories. Attended Cried in 1973 when X dropped football while I was a student; cried again when stadium was demolished but hope sprung eternal for football’s return. Attended very 1st club team practice in 2006 at Sherman park; all that was there were a few coaches, some hungry players and five footballs. Nothing else. Yet, here we are two years later following the 2007 season (4-2 record and champions of the club league). All very remarkable. Last year, the Muskies played some exciting football as did the other club teams. The price is right and the football excellent. Thank you for a terrific piece about this team. (I wish I had saved my Junior Musketeer badge but maybe a new JM club will happen. But I still have my plastic football caught at UC in 1966.)By Kevin Donovan

Hey, Kevin: Thanks for the awesome E-mail. I have a confession to make. If it weren’t for my friend, Tom Langenbrunner, I would’ve never been a member of the Junior Muskies. Tom was a member and encouraged me to join. I did. Tom & his dad drove me to the games. I owe Tom & his dad a HUGE DEBT of gratitude. BTW, XU coach Tom (Tower Of) Powers tells me that “support checks” (MONEY) are coming in for the XU FB program. Not to pat myself on the back, but this blog posting about XU football ought to be sent to EVERY XU alumni organization on the planet. Long Live XU football! — ChickBy Kevin Donovan

Chick: Not a wizard about blog postings and e-mails but there is definitely a need to get the word out. Yesterday, I was at the Ham. Co. Courthouse on the elevator coming down from the 6th floor law library. It stops on the 4th floor and on comes both the Hamilton County Prosecutor, Joe Deters and the Sheriff, Si Leis. Joe and I talk about Monday’s game as Joe’s son is a freshman on the team (as well as his nephew). Joe tells Si about the club football program to which Leis notes that it is news to him. Talked to the Sheriff on the way back to the Justice Center; and he recalled that it was Fr. Mulligan who killed the football program. Leis is a XU grad. Ran into two XU grads at today’s St. X/Bosco game and we informed them of the program and Monday’s game and they were enthused. At the game, sat behind two cuurent club players and asked them about publicity for the game on campus (seeing that the most recent weekly Xavier Newswire did not contain a story). There is a ways to go to get the word out but we are getting there. Your support is very much appreciated (I read your coumn a few years ago which wondered why X did not have FB and agreed whole heartedly.)By Kevin Donovan

Chick: Sorry about repeats; never sure post went through but alas it did 3x. How well do you know Paul Daugherty? I think human interest side of X football is compelling: QB is 24 yr old Labor Dept. employee taking one MBA class. DL is 29 yr. old MBA student taking two classes. Center is 26 yr. old ex-Marine Gulf War Vet. Coach Powers is a former dentist who played football at Villanova, etc.) X next faces Lincoln U.’s D-2 program certainly not a club team) Your thoughts?By Kevin Donovan

Spoke to Coach Powers today and he related to me how X won this game. What follows is what he sent to me in e-mail form: Edwardsville, IL: Craig Hallman kicked a 27 - yard field goal with 2:36 left in the game and the Xavier Musketeers (4-1, 2-0 MCFC) held on for a 17 - 14 comeback win in Saturday’s Midwestern Club Football Conference action against the Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville Cougars (1-3, 0-2 MCFC). Both teams were plagued by turnovers the entire game (12 combined), but the Musketeers newfound running game (184 total yards) alllowed them to stay in the game and eventually helped them to overcome their early 14-point deficit. LB Andrew Dornbrook led the XU defense with 2 interceptions, 8 tackles, and a deflected punt. Also having interceptions were DBs Eric Miles, David Pergolini, Andon Daniels, and D-lineman James Tilton. LBs Phil Migitz and Brett Hoyer chipped in with nine tackles each. Backup runningback, Brian Hoyer had 176 yards on 34 carries and one TD for the Muskies and A. Daniels (3 receptions: 38 yards) also caught a 7-yard pass from Chris Greenwood to get the Musketeers on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Dan Deters led the XU receivers with 3 catches for 51 yards. The Musketeer CLub Football Team travels to Oxford, Ohio next Sunday (Nov. 2) for a rematch with the Miami Redhawks in their annual “Clash for the Club” game. Kickoff is 12:00 noon. 1 2 3 4 total XU Musketeers 0 14 0 3 17 SIUE Cougars 14 0 0 0 14 SIUE 8-yard run (run good) SIUE 5-yard pass (run failed) XU Daniels 7-yard pass from Greenwood (Hallman Kick) XU Brian Hoyer 18-yard run (Hallman Kick) XU Hallman 27-yard FG Xavier (4-1, 2-0 MCFC); SIUE (1-3, 0-2 MCFC) Tom Powers, Jr. (513) 746-5449 tepowersjr@yahoo.com
