Rihanna, Michelle Obama, Amy Poehler among magazine’s ‘Women of the Year.’ Who would be your pick?

Rihanna is a snazzy dresser, but was she exceptional this year?

The Pop princess is recognized as one of “Glamour” magazine’s “Women of the Year 2009.”

First lady Michelle Obama also receives special recognition in the magazine on stands now. Others in the list include Amy Poehler, Marissa Mayer, Jane Aronson, Maria Shriver and Susan Rice.

While it can’t be denied that Rihanna is a fashion trendsetter, can anyone call her a “woman of the year” with a straight face?

She didn’t exactly set a good example for her fans by reportedly initially going back to abusive ex- boyfriend Chris Brown. The pair ultimately split.

Still the unfortunate segment in the young singer’s life ( she says she went to sleep Rihanna and woke up Britney Spears) did bring attention to teenage domestic violence and she is speaking up now.

She told Glamour:

Domestic violence is a big secret. No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can’t tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. You don’t dare let your neighbor know that you fight. It’s one of the things we [women] will hide, because it’s embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women.

What do you think of the list? Who would you add? Who would you remove?

Remove all. To be determined who should be added.

seems sexist. Are women so inferior that they need to be acknowledged for achievements within a gender category? Are they unable to compete as a person of the year within a spectrum that includes both genders and all cultures? If not maybe the acknowledgements should be further constrained to perhaps, East Lithuanian woman of the year or, barnum and Bailey Circus little person woman acrobat of the year.

How about giving the title “Women of the Year” to all of the brave women in our military.
