Video: Watch David Letterman discuss his affairs and the blackmail attempt that followed

UPDATE (Friday, Oct. 2 at 1:45 p.m.) : CBS News producer Robert J. “Joe” Halderman has been indicted in an extortion plot against talk show host David Letterman, according to the Associated Press.

Halderman was arrested Thursday and indicted on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny, punishable by five to 15 years upon conviction, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said Friday.

Warning: dirty deeds often lead to much dirtier deeds.

David Letterman on his show Thursday, Oct. 1, discussed affairs with his employees and a “terrifying” blackmail scheme.

Letterman, who married his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March, told his stunned audience that a man threatened to produce a screenplay and book based on “terrible, terrible things” that the talk show had done.

The man demanded $2 million. Instead of coughing up the cash, Letterman went to authorities.

A CBS News employee from the true-crime show “48 Hours” was arrested and has been suspended from the network.

CBS says the man was Joe Halderman, who has worked for the network more than 20 years.

In the video above, Letterman talks about the case and sexual relationships with his female employees.

“I have had sex with women who work on this show,” Letterman said. “Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would, especially for the women.”
