Does Magazine’s cover photo of Michael Jackson’s death go too far?

OK! Magazine paid top dollars for a photo of the King of Pop dead or dying, but should they have made it the cover shot of this week’s magazine?

Jackson cover.jpg
Does this cover take it too far?

The celebrity magazine is catching more than a little flak for doing just that.

Gawker.com and other sources say OK! paid $500,000 for the photo of Michael Jackson apparently taken as he laid dying or dead Thursday, June 25.

Maybe that’s why they they figured they could do what they wanted with it. But seriously, do we really need to see a dead man while standing in line to buy eggs and Slim Jims?

What the heck?

In other MJ news, Jermaine Jackson told the Today Show’s Matt Lauer that he wishes he had died instead of his brother.

“I always felt I was his backbone,” an emotional Jermaine Jackson says, adding that he always tried to protect his brother.

Michael Jackson is dead? I didn’t know!!! Why hasn’t this been in the news every second of every day since it happened? Sad yes, the man was an icon but let’s all move on please.

I know he wasn’t the best person people but he was a son, a brother, and a father. Have a little respect at least for that.

There will never be another star that’s so well known.Even if someone doesn’t care for M.J, they know who he is and guaranteed they know atleast one of his songs. He was a great talent and he’ll never be replaced as far as talent.

I’m with overit, below - tired of hearing about his death. Farrah died the same day, and Billy Mays a couple of days later. Farrah & Billy died from medical conditions that should be brought into the spotlight, but instead they’re overshadowed by the drug-addicted, plastic-surgery-disaster that was Michael Jackson. So of course we have to hear about it incessantly for the next forever. Blah.

OK MAG WENT WAY TOO FAR. ARE THEY HOPING THAT THIS MAG WILL SELL IN HOPES TO BECOME A COLLECTORS ITEM OR SOMETHING. SOMEONE SHOULD BE FIRED FOR THIS DECISION. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ‘OK’ MAGAZINE. THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TASTEFUL AND CLASSY UP TO NOW. WHO THE HELL IS IN CHARGE? THIS WAS WRONG!! DOES ANYONE REMEMBER A DEAD PERSON’S PIC BEING PUT ON A MAG BEFORE? I CAN’T REMEMBER IT. PRETTY TACKY. I DON’T CARE WHO IT IS. JUST GOES TO PROVE HOW LOW THIS WORLD HAS GOTTEN.

Were any of you stone throwers there for the alleged molestings? If not, you don’t know that it happened. Michael Jackson’s death was not expected, Farrah had a terminal disease. He is one of the most well loved and undeniable the greatest entertainer that has EVER lived. The next time you are watching t.v. and you don’t want to hear about him, guess what you can do?…turn it off!!!

The media has no respect for the family. This won’t make it any easier on them. The newspaper published a picture of my mother when she died in a car accident while she was still in the car. Totally tasteless and disrepectful.

Brian - if I recall correctly - Michael Jackson was never actually convicted as a child molester OR pedophile. Funny how those people went away when it came to a financial settlement. If my child had been a victim of such an act - I wouldn’t care about the $$$, I would go after that person with every fiber in my being? Coincidence? I think not.

To Overitaswell and like-minded individuals: Does the name LaVena Johnson mean anything to you? No? She is - was a 19 year old US soldier in Iraq. She was raped and acid was poured into her v****a; she was beaten, as evidenced by a swollen lip, black eye and other bruises. A trail of blood indicated that she had left her tent, but does not indicate that she re-entered, despite the fact that she was found dead in her tent, shot in the head with her rifle. The Army says suicide: case closed. Didn’t hear about this? No wonder. This happened at the same time that the drug-addicted, plastic-surgery disaster named Anna Nicole Smith was found dead of a drug overdose. Of the two stories mentioned here, which one do you think is most important? Which one do you think dominated every television station, newspaper, radio, blog, radio station, etc. for weeks? At least Michael Jackson had talent. Even if you don’t like the man, we should at least acknowledge his talent. By the way, James Dean – another drug abuser - died in 1955, and people still gather at his memorial every year on September 30. Are you over that as well!?

I think this is very distasteful. Even in Michael’s death, people are trying to make money off of him. That is no way to sell magazines. And Michael was never convicted of any charges. But those a-holes who accused him, took his money all the way to the bank, didn’t they!!

Michael Jackson was a planetary genius who left his impact on the human history.Maybe once a millenium such a phenomenum could happen. He was honest, genuine and generous and offered his heart and soul to the mankind. He was never a child molestor, his innocence made him a victim.Calling him just a ‘musician artist’is so banal,he was in fact the Meaning of Art .

I’m an aspired journalist and I would never disrespect someone’s family or loved ones that way. Out of all the decent pictures they could’ve put on the cover they bought that one. They could’ve used a pic from his last dance rehearsal as a cover, and then used the pic of him dying/dead for the cover story inside the magazine. I think that would be more respectful.

wow, a guy who spent entire life seeking publicity now should be entitled to privacy? I’m thinking not so much. He wanted to be a circus side show, now in death he’s even a bigger freak show. I expect his funeral will hit new lows in bad taste and weirdness.

It is entirely disrespectful to MJ and his family and fans. If I were a magazine distributor I would refuse to carry this issue. Michael was a real, flesh and blood human being. Being a celebrity for 40+ years doesn’t make him any less human or deserving of common decency and dignity in death as well as life.

If the magazine went too far with this picture, how is DDN any different in printing it also? Whatever your belief, he is dead. Yes, he was a music icon, father, son, brother. Let the man rest.

Bon - I need to correct you in your faulty logic. Just because someone does not get convicted of a crime does NOT mean he or she is innocent. It only means they were not “caught”. While the only people to ever know the truth concerning Jackson’s alleged pedophilia are the children “involved”, the fact that Jackson paid off families makes him more than suspect. For a crime of the magnitude of pedophilia, I can think of NO ONE who would pay to make it go away rather than defend your own good name.

WhatDidYouSay, you made an excellent post. I had not heard about LaVena Johnson, but after reading your post I Googled her. What happened to her is despicable, and it appears that the U.S. Army did its level best to cover it up. And yes, I do recall that Anna Nicole Smith’s death was given an immense amount of coverage. It certainly was not commensurate with her talent.

I just wanted to let all of you know that we look forward to the entombment of Michael Jackson. He is so sweet. Once we pick out the pieces from the numerous plastic surgeries and scar tissue we just know he will be delicious. He was simply a mortal, don’t deify him - we surely won’t.

A magazine cover, with a dying man plastered across it, is absolutely horrible. What has become of this society? The Jackson family should take legal action against these monsters.

People keep saying, “if I had a child, I would never accept a settlement…” You cannot ascribe one set of morals to the parents of the victims and another to Michael Jackson. I could just as easily say.. “If I had been accused of child molestation, and was innocent, I would never settle out of court” OR “if I were accused of child molestation and was innocent, I would stop having sleep overs with boys” OR “.. I wouldn’t have installed an adult alarm” OR “…I wouldn’t show more interest in strangers boys than my own children” etc, etc. At the very minimum, MJ was a messed up perv who is guilty of emotional abuse to these boys, and most likely a child molester.

Yes the mag is wronge for this, but things like this have been done for many years and will still be done for years to come. So get over it. As far as a mag goes it doesn’t care if it is good or bad but the more that people talk about it the better cause they are getting there name out and that is free advertizment. So the best thing is to just don’t make a big fuss, it will pass as all other bad things do.

he’s dead let it be. if you don’t want to see his pic on a magazine, don’t look at it. no one seem to mind his pic on a magazine before so why should this one be a problem, just something else to grumble about i guess. disrespectful, yes, but get a life and go on he has(gone on)

The question isn’t why Jackson would settle. The question is what parent would accept a settlement in lieu of conviction for a person who allegedly molested their child? Jackson was never convicted on any counts, but legality, truth, and logic are the enemies of emotional bias. If you think he molested children, you will seek only information that confirms your belief without checking the credibility of the information. If you can find others to agree with you, you will feel pleased with your reasoning. His death is only more sad than others if he was innocent and lived accused. His death is less sad if he was guilty.

This is in response to the July 2, 2009, post from “B”. You must be terribly disappointed. The memorial for Michael Jackson was moving and very spritual. Many of people who actually knew Michael Jackson, the person, spoke of his gentleness, kindness, and loving nature towards all people. Hope you can understand on some level, not all people conduct themselves in wordly, physical manner. Mr. Jackson obviously was a man of faith…he had a personal relationship with Jesus and spent his life striving to be like him. Such a blessing he was and what joy his music brings us still.
