EMA takes $900 working lunch

Update: Click here for a written response from Butler County Emergency Management Director William Turner to the criticisms below.

Original post:

Butler County commissioners were already varying shades of displeased with Butler County Emergency Management Director William Turner. And they are still waiting on a full report on what needs to be changed to prevent another string of mishaps as happened after Hurricane Ike hit.

So when they were asked Thursday to approve more than $1,000 in reimbursements for catered training workshops, they went off. Commissioner Gregory Jolivette:

“It seems like they say let’s go to lunch and while we’re at it, let’s have a meeting.”

Commissioner Donald Dixon:

“Based on the last performance that I saw, maybe we ought to do a little less eating and a little more training.”

Commission President Charles Furmon:

“That does sound exorbitant in my estimation.”

The reimbursements were for three training workshops. One was a $900 lunch at Montgomery Inn at the Boathouse, and two were at Washington Platform Saloon and Restaurant, totaling $344.25.

Turner said they try to keep the cost of food at these events at a minimum, but it is paid for with federal homeland security money.

He’s a test question for the commissioners: EMA provides lunch for firemen and policemen attending all day training on homeland security. The sheriff hires a dog warden and a lawyer to work out of his office when the county already has both. Which is the biggest waste.

Your Federal tax dollars at work. When I attend training sessions, its pizza or cold cuts. Maybe because my boss practices austerity and common sense.

Can Turner be fired? If so, why isn’t he gone? Who is overseeing these government people in Hamilton? Let’s start auditing each office/department in the government building and lets start chopping useless positions and people in these government buildings.

Just turn the entire county over to Sheriff Jones. Why do we even need commissioners with a savior like our Sheriff? Get off EMA’s back. I’m sure you’ve never gone to a working lunch huh? Tell you what I’ll take your parking place in the GSC and you can park out in the garage with the common folk. Give it to Jones now or later it’s gonna happen eventually!!!

First thing we have to ask ourselves about this lunch reimbursements is how many people took part in the training? If it’s just several, then there’s an obvious problem. If there were 40-50 people then, no problem. Do the math!

Its just a good ole boys club thing. You know who cares? The tax payer will foot the bill. Let it run wild is their attitude. some one else is paying. They have the George Bush mentality.

Maybe the EMA director needs to remember that Homeland Security is funded by the taxpayers of this county and every other county in this country. That is just outragious. Brown bag the next training session.

Want to keep the individual meals at a constant price? Serve all personnel MRE’s. That’s what our US government provides and expects our military to survive upon. Since these are re-imbursed by Homeland Security of the Federal Government, serve the MRE’s (you won’t need yer ole trusty P38 to access your viddles!).
