Dayton Band Playoffs reach semi-finals

There are only four bands left standing in the 2009 Dayton Band Playoffs. This week the final two bands will be determined for the September 26th Playoff final at Canal Street Tavern.

Here is a run down of this week’s semi-final match-ups.

Wednesday, September 2nd at Canal Street Tavern: Skilless Villains vs Oxymoronatron

I do not know who will win, but I know that Wednesday’s semi-final will be fun and entertaining. My electro-robot-punk friends in Oxymoronatron will pull out all the stops in the semi-final. They were defeated last year in the semi-final round, and I know that think they can make the finals this year.

But, Oxy’s opponent, rock group Skilless Villains, told me that their fans will help them make the finals.

“Our fans in the Mercer Co. area as well as our fans in the Columbus/Southern Ohio area have really been great. These people drive something like an hour and a half one way to watch us play until 2 am on a Wednesday and then drive an hour and a half back to the respective abodes to sleep for 3 hrs and go to work the next day. That to us that is awe inspiring. We are so blessed to have such supportive fans,” said the band.

September 3rd at Canal Street Tavern: Good English vs Turkish Delights

The edge in this one is most likely with Good English. They have packed Canal Street Tavern in every round, and have garnered the most number of votes thus far of any band in the competition.

But, the indie-pop-rock trio Turkish Delights are hungry to win and to be heard.

“Each show we play, whether it be within the confines of the Dayton Band Playoffs or not, gives us a chance to play our music for some people that have never heard/seen us before. We put a lot into what we do, i guess the hope is that people can get something out of it,” said Turkish Delights front-man Josh.

Attend the shows, and vote for the band that you feel is the best. Not your friends.

LIke Asian food? Here are some restaurants worth trying [restaurants]

Asian food

The Miami Valley's Asian dining scene continues to welcome impressive newcomers as it blossoms and diversifies. Dayton-area Asian food enthusiasts now have access to great diversity of dishes and cuisines. Chinese cuisine dominated the Asian dining landscape 20 years ago and remains a potent force. But today there are far more Thai and Korean options available locally, and Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants, including sushi bars, have increased. Here's a sampler platter of a few of the relatively new (or newer) Asian restaurants well worth trying. More »
