Show of the Week: Rock-a-billy Prom at the DDC

In May of last year the Dayton Dirt Collective opened their all-ages show space at 144 E. Third St. (across from the Library).

The space was opened under the idea that art and music could be shared in a friendly and respectful environment where any and all were permitted to take part.

Now a year later, I think it is safe to say the DDC community is flourishing.

“We have shows about 4 nights a week comprised of local bands and touring bands,” said Special Events Coordinator at the DDC Shelly Hulce.

“It’s amazing how many touring bands come find us. The word about this unique venue is on the grid and we are meeting some really exciting people and fans from all over the US. Some of them redirect their tours to come play here,” Hulce continued.

Hulce, who is also known as the official ‘Gladgirl’, has organized a Rock-a-Billy Prom set to happen Friday, May 8th, at the DDC from 7 - 11. Performing will be Akillis Green, Brian Hoeflich and the All Nighters, and The Rebel Set.

“I wanted to put together something more than a rock show and being prom season I thought a prom or some kind of dance would be fun,” said Hulce.

Hulce expressed her reasons for putting together the Rock-a-Billy Prom to Don Thrasher on ActiveDayton.com. She said, “like any genre of music there’s a whole style built around it, the Rockabilly style is more than good music — it’s hot cars, good looking girls, fashion, sytlin’ guys with pompadours and sideburns — you name it. And because it’s kind of a wholesome genre, it’s a little more accessible to everyone.”

I mean how could I not make the Rock-a-Billy Prom my show of the week. I already have a date.

However, I would like to add a list of other must see shows this weekend. My new friend PJ, a faithful follower of this silly blog, asked if I could list more of the “good” shows going on.

So here is an attempt at that. Feel free to list shows in the comments that I happen to miss.

Friday, May 8th: Richard Smith/ Julie Adams at Canal Street Tavern, Reece Lincoln/Josh Pilot Band at Oregon Express, Blue Moon Revue at Peach’s.

Saturday, May 9th: My Latex Brain/ The Professors at Canal Street Tavern, Paper Airplane/ Jordan Hull at Oregon Express, The Turkish Delights/ Thee Pistol Whips at Blind Bob’s

Sunday, May 10th: State School/Towhee at Pacchia. Tantric/ Small Town Sleeper/Orange Willard at Atmosphere.
