Smug Brothers release free digital ep today

Fictionband has posted Fortune Rumors Vol. 2 by Dayton super-band the Smug Brothers for free download. Download it here: http://fictionband08.blogspot.com/

Sometimes writing this silly blog has it’s perks. I got passed a copy of Fortune Rumors Vol. 2 last week. It is so good, I feel guilty that I got it for free.

The new EP is the second of six free EP’s that the Smug Brothers are set to give away. Every two weeks a new collection of songs will be released for free by Fictionband.

Fortune Rumors Vol. 2 is four fresh-sounding and perfectly crafted lo-fi indie-pop songs that are packed with hooks from beginning to end.

The Smug Brothers is mainly Kyle Melton (Mascot, Montgomery Greene, Area Code), Darryl Robbins (Peopleperson, Big Baby, Motel Beds), and Don Thrasher (Swearing at Motorist, GBV, New Creatures).

The three talented Dayton-rock veterans wrote and recorded the songs in Melton’s house over the past year. The home recording gives the songs a very identifiable sound as well as an extra bit of originality and warmth.

“We were originally going to do a full album called Fortune Rumors, which was 18 tracks,” said Thrasher. “When Kyle broke it up into EP’s, he ended up adding a few more songs.”

Adding to the mystic of the Smug Brothers is the Fortune Rumors artwork that can be downloaded with each EP. The Vol. 2 features a faded photo of a middle-school-aged Don Thrasher.

“I lived in Alabama until I was 15 and the cover art are all from my yearbooks from 8th and 9th grade in Haleyville, Alabama,” said Thrasher. “We’re talking mid-to-late ’70s here so that is why everyone looks so groovy.”
