Bee Thousand tops Amazon’s greastest indie records

This week Amazon.com released their list of the 100 greatest indie-rock albums of all-time.

Number one on the list was Dayton’s Guided By Voices with their classic Bee Thousand.

Amazon stated, “We challenge anyone to definitively define what is and what is not indie rock, you will fail. For the purposes of compiling this list we’ve decided to use a combination of hard and fast rules and gut instinct.”

The list got music blogs like Stereogum and Pitchfork talking and fans weighed in on the list.

As a blog-addict, I read hundreds of the fan comments about the list. Many fans disagreed with the list in general, like it’s order or their favorite band was left off. However, I saw very few complaints about GBV being number one. Most were happy to see “GBV get their due.”

Bee Thousand was released in 1994 and it launched GBV on the national spotlight.

The album got it’s name when the band was on tour and saw a movie theater sign advertising the showing of the movie ‘Beethoven’ (the dog movie). However, the theater misspelled the movie’s title on their marque. They wrote the words Bee Thousand instead. It stuck.

Just a bit of useless trivia. I hope its true. Read the entire list at Amazon.com.
