Show of the Week: Sleepybird/Mascot
Do not forget that this weekend is a double-dose of Over the Rhine at Canal Street Tavern. Both Friday and Saturday the popular veteran Cincinnati indie-rockers will take the stage at Canal Street. Word is these shows will sell out so all Over the Rhine junkies should get tickets in advance.
As for me I will be in Yellow Springs at Peach’s on Friday, March 27th, to see local experimental indie band Sleepybird with singer/songwriter Mascot.
Sleepybird’s music is layers of dreamscapes and instrumentation that includes horns, electronics, and various strings. This will be the band’s first show of ‘09.
The band has been working on the follow-up to their 2006 critically acclaimed record All Things Are Mine. The band announced late last year that their new record will be out in ‘09 and will be called The Sadness Will Last Forever. The band has posted a video for the album’s first single at www.sleepybird.net.
Opening the show is Mascot. The man behind the Mascot is the infamous and talented Kyle Melton. Also known as the creator of the popular and addicting Buddha Den music blog (http://buddhaden.blogspot.com).
I had a chance to see Melton earlier this month at Canal Street Tavern’s songwriters in the round. His songs were softly catchy and smart. Melton even surprised me with an acoustic version of a song from one of his former band’s Area Code. That was the highlight. www.myspace.com/mascotohio.
