The 1984 NFL Draft mini-tour this weekend

The 1984 NFL Draft is local singer/songwriter Joe Anderl. His same sobbingly honest and reflective songs with all of the same onstage heart. Except, he now has a band around him.

“As for the name change, I wanted to differentiate between playing full band shows and solo shows. It is a little confusing for people but I am sure it will catch on eventually,” said Anderl. “All future recordings will be the 1984 NFL Draft.”

This weekend Anderl and the 1984 NFL Draft will be playing a 4-stop mini-tour through the heart of Ohio.

The short jaunt will begin Thursday, February 26th, at Blind Bob’s in Dayton. The band will then visit Athens, Cleveland, and Columbus in consecutive nights.

Anderl will be joined by drummer Chris Messina from Cleveland for all four shows. For the Dayton show Patrice Hall (from the American Static) will be adding some violin.

Anderl told me that this weekend he would be playing songs from his last two records, 2007’s I Heart Joe Anderl and 2008’s the Fictionband Sessions. He said he will “maybe” throw in a new song or two.

So, when can his legions of local fans expect the first 1984 NFL Draft disc?

“I hope to get to recording over the summer. I am a little less focused on putting out a new record and a little more focused on writing and crafting the right songs,” said Anderl. “I think with that approach a new record will just come out when it is ready. It is a lot less forced than before,” he added.
