What will ‘09 bring for Dayton music?
I really have reservations about making a ‘best of’ list for 2008.
So, I will refer you to Don Thrasher’s list at ActiveDayton.com (search ‘new breed ‘08’), the Buddha Den blog (http://buddhaden.blogspot.com/), and the top 97 at www.woxy.com.
However, I would like to recognize some of my favorite moments of 2008 in Dayton music.
My top ‘08 moment was the Dayton Music Fest and the Bob Pollard home-coming. Nearly 1000 local music fans gathered downtown for a great night of music last October. The DMF featured over 30 local bands at seven local clubs and bars. The night was climaxed by the performance of the former GBV front-man’s newest project Boston Spaceships at a packed Gilly’s.
One of the biggest additions to Dayton local music this year was the opening of Blind Bob’s. I must admit I had experienced a Summer case of the blues when the Nite Owl closed. But, I was quick to recover when I realized how supportive Blind Bob’s would be of local music. The newly remodeled Oregon District eatery and bar became a prominent place to play in ‘08. They were part host of the DMF and the recent host of Holi-Dayton.
I also can not forget about this year’s Canal Street Tavern Dayton Band Playoffs champion Magic Jackson. The funk/rock band, who will be performing New Year’s Eve at Canal Street Tavern, narrowly beat out the piano-pop duo Joose Box in the DBP finals. The annual Summer-long local music competition is always memorable. But, the single digit vote count at this year’s DBP final gave it some added drama. Like past DBP champions, Magic Jackson can expect a big and busy 2009.
These a just a few moments I remember from 2008.
What do you remember about Dayton local music from 2008? What were your favorite shows? Favorite local records?
This is an interactive blog and I really want to know what Dayton music fans hope to see in 2009?
I must say I am really looking forward to the new Sleepybird cd. The band announced the new cd would be called The Sadness Will Last Forever. I hear they are working hard on it.

I’m looking forward to a newly energized line-up debut for Luxury Pushers here in the Dirty Gem. Fighting, bar-banning and sheer stupidity aren’t NEARLY enough to stop LXP. Ears to the ground kiddies…By Janelle

Please tell your music staff about a hot Boston band playing in Wapak of all places this Friday 1/16. Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles hit Rhythm and Brews with kickin’ punk country. I’m just a fan who can’t believe you guys are getting this band in Ohio of all places. Go directly to ITunes and listen to Belle of the Bar, or Same Old 45. This sassy lady kills on guitar.By boo

Musicians beware…another local venue that is falling into the category of a place you are likely to be ripped off by getting shorted in your agreed pay: Kings Point Pub. Just a heads up, players.
