Murmur ready to release debut
Four years and five drummers after the first formation of Dayton indie-pop/rock band Murmur the band is finally ready to release their debut cd.
The band’s new record will be called Neverend and will officially hit the streets on Saturday, September 27th, as Murmur hosts their first ever cd release show at the Oregon Express.
Murmur guitarist and mandolin player Tim Staley e-mailed me the final mixes of the eleven tracks that make up Neverend earlier this week.
Shortly after I unzipped the audio files and plugged in the speakers I was floored. The cd sounds great.
Murmur has the rare skill of perfectly mixing mood with melody. They proudly show off this skill on Neverend.
The cd begins with a shaker and a reverbed guitar in a moody ode to heartbreak called ‘It’s Pouring’.
Murmur then bangs out a couple catchy and hook-filled hot rockers at track two and three called ‘Our Last Trip’ and ‘Always’.
The title track comes in mid-way through the record as a chorus of harmonized voices sing “if we never start, we’ll never end.”
My personal fav is the song ‘Is That OK’. It is a quirky pop song with more Murmur trademarked harmonies and an ear popping happy toy keyboard to die for.
I asked Staley how long the band had been working on the record.
He said, “We’ve been working on the album since 2005, but with the changes in drummers, we’ve recorded and re-recorded most the songs several times. Most of the versions actually on the album were recorded last year.”
Thanks Tim for the disc. See ya at Oregon Express on Saturday for the release show.
