Columbus’ Lovebones to play Canal Street Tavern
The Dayton band Trees disbanded last year after only one record, but a whole lot of acclaim.
The Trees cd, which hit stores last May, earned them a nod as one of the top 25 local records of 2007 according to the Dayton Daily News.
Trees front-man Matt Monk and drummer Justin Walsh are coming back to Dayton this weekend after a bit of a hibernation in Nashville and with a new band based out of Columbus.
Their new band is an indie-rock three piece with a bit of a southern rock influence called the Lovebones. Think Kings of Leon cross-bred with the Beatles.
The Lovebones will be at Canal Street Tavern this Thursday, March 27th, with Never Ending Conflict.
“We’re really stoked to play Canal Street this Thursday,” said Monk. “We want Canal Street to remember the Lovebones.”
The Lovebones show at Canal Street is part of weekend of shows across the state which includes a show Friday in Columbus at Scarlet and Grey and on Saturday in Cleveland at Peabody’s.
Off the reminisce of Trees’ success and the Lovebones new demo (for sale now) the band is earning it’s keep in the midwest circuit. They are gaining undying support from fanatic fans who have started Lovebones street teams and fan websites.
“We feel that our music and performances are really standing out in the indie scene, and our loyal fanbase has followed us everywhere thus far,” said Monk. “Dayton is a great city and community and we’d love to come back as often as possible.”

I have been asked about a certain comment on this page many times so I thought I would set everybody straight. Yes, I did produce and engineer this CD as Matty & Brian did a little of that as well. I used Pro Tools and used many different tracks to create the final tracks. As far as where these songs came from, well…. they all have their own story. And only the band knows that. But for the most part, I would come up with an idea and Matty would do likewise and every Thrusday morning we would work out what we would do that weekend. Then we would spend the entire weekend recording it. Matty composed 88% or so of the lyrics and some ideas on guitar. I would create something on guitar or use his idea and restucture it. I did arrange the CD (taking the idea and turning it into a song) and spent a lot of time editing/mixing. Except for “Inside You” which I co-wrote with Gary Nickell, Matty and I did this together and the other boys did some hard work on it as well. When we went to Nashville, the fellas just didn’t understand my plans and there began a seperation. This happens in many bands. I decided that instead of spending my time trying to change their way of thinking, I stepped out which broke my heart but I felt that it was the best thing to do. I read the comment and realized that I know who you are by the way you have done me wrong recently and only you and I need to know that. I did not write it and want to say that this is some of my best work and I enjoyed doing it. I am very proud of it!I really hoped we could have takin it all the way. Peace & Love To All! i bought the trees cd on cd baby and love it. even the cover is gorgeous. the songs were uplifting and spiritual. don’t care much for the singer but the message is beautiful. it is musically amazing, great harmonies and the guitar and keyboard work is awesome. i think if it was re-released with a better singer, this would be a hit cd. i saw the new band a few weeks back a festival and was wondering what happen to the band and why they changed their name. the band i saw was nothin like the cd and i was very very disappoited.By Sheila

Just for the record! I have been making music in this city for many years and the truth should be known. I not only played on the trees cd I also watch the real person who created that music. The only reason I bother writing this is because I think credit should go where it belongs. Dole Shaffer was the man who made the Trees happened and only to be betrade by Matty himself. Dole gave up his job and his home becuase he believed in Matty, altho I never saw what Dole did in him. If any of you heard the Trees cd and compared it to what you hear now, you would know why the cd made the top 25. It was Dole’s unique song structure style, his misicianship and tech. skills, and his production talent. Don’t take my word for it, ask anyone who knows Dole’s work. This paper should be talking about the real talent in this town. Matty was a student of Dole’s and this is the only reason he was in Dayton. I do not write this to try to take anything from the Lovebones, but I personally don’t care for thier music, I write this to make the record clear. Go get the Trees cd and listen to the difference and you will agree. Matty was closer than he thinks to reaching his dream and he blew it. Dole has been contacted by several record labels since he left the band and has considered rebuilding the band with new members but has decided to do his own thing. It is sad that this paper dosn’t do their homework and find out where the real talent in this town because, many times I have watched Dole at work and it is just a matter of time before this paper claims him as their own. If you really want to find out how Matty has become known and Dayton, then do some research on Dole Shaffer.By Matty
