Benefit show for local Olympic hopeful

Local wheelchair racer Nick Cunningham has been called “America’s Fastest” in the sport. He has competed in 8 World Championships and two Paralympics and has received a medal at each.

Cunningham hopes that with the help of area bands he will raise enough money to compete in this year’s Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.

“One day a friend of mine, Eric Caslin from MezzLab Multimedia, told me that if I have the will to do it (go to the Olympics) than there is no reason why money should stop me,” said Cunningham. “Eric has been raising money for me ever since and I cannot thank him enough.”

Caslin has organized a benefit show happening this Friday, March 7th, at Dayton’s newest venue Seven Timbers Live (32 Webster St.) All proceeds from the show will go to send Cunningham to Beijing.

“I am really excited about the show this Friday and I am overwhelmed at the support people are giving me as I try to make it to the Paralympics,” said Cunningham.

The line-up for the benefit show, which begins at 5 pm, is G-Nome, Kris Hanson, Revelation Revolution, Rich Jones, Skratchmatic, and Reggie Stone.

Cunningham, who is a full-time student at Wright State, has spent the last two racing seasons couching the Wright State Wheelchair Track Club.

“It is my mission to help other people in wheelchairs realize that they too can achieve athletic greatness,” Cunningham said. “I encourage them to work hard and not back down from a world created for able bodied people.”

As a coach Cunningham has taken his team to two U.S. Nationals and placed both times including one gold.
