Hip-Hop Holiday with Skratchmatik
The Pearl will host a Christmas theme hip-hop and graffiti art show this Thursday, December 20th.
The event, appropriately dubbed “Hip-Hop Holiday,” will feature several hip-hop artists performing as well as live graffiti and craft artists. A portion of the proceeds from the artwork and door sales will be donated to Kids Wish Network of Dayton.
Local DJ collective and hip-hop veterans Skratchmatik have been employed to supply the beats for the event and headline the performances.
Skratchmatik is the coming together of five of the areas most talented DJs on one stage. The five vinyl throwers include Etcha Skratch, Fatty Lumpkin, Illness, Don Mega, and Mezz. They are often fronted by MC -F.O.R.C.E.
With a diverse background of hip-hop, drum and bass, funk, soul, dub, and breaks, Skratchmatik has earned a reputation as the area’s best collection of DJs.
They have also made a name on the national front by performing with such big names as KRS-One, GZA of Wu Tang, Saul Williams, 2 Live Crew, D-Styles, DJ Swamp, and DJ Muggs.
The DJ collective host Dayton’s “biggest and best” weekly hip-hop night at the Nite Owl, including this Monday, December 17th.
A Skratchmatik performance often features the beat-makers scratching at the same time to make a song or a background for a guest MC with only the use of vinyl records.
Skratchmatik, who will be joined at the Pearl by Fingerprintz, L-Marr the Great, and Storyteller, told me last week that they promise to “keep the crowd moving” and that they love “to rock a party.”
