DaytonBands.com asks if radio should play local music

I often check in with DaytonBands.com to see what some local fans and musicians are thinking and talking about.

The current poll question on DaytonBands.com caught my eye and I thought I would explore the topic a bit more.

The poll asks, “do you think that commercial radio should play more local music?”

Currently 83 percent of people who responded said that they thought more local music should be played on commercial radio, but only if the music was a good quality recording. 15 percent thought local music should be played on the radio despite the recording quality.

I am indifferent about the recording quality issue, but why not put more local band’s over the airwaves?

Wxeg.com features a local band page that lists local shows and links, but on-air the radio station has not replaced their long-time local music show Joe’s Garage since it went off the air. I will give the X credit, however for involving local band’s in this year’s X-Fest.

Public radio has long supported local music. 91.3 WYSO is very good about mixing in local artists on their various music shows. DJ Rev Cool, host of the WYSO Friday night show Around the Fringe, recently dedicated two hours of air-time to Dayton bands involved in the Dayton Music Fest. Rev Cool consistently supports local acts by conducting interviews with local musicians and advertising local music events.

106.9 WWSU, Wright State University radio, has a local music show that airs Sunday nights from 9 - 11 pm. Host Juliet has advertised that local artists/bands will be performing live in the studio during the Fall.

I am unaware of any other area-wide broadcasted local shows on the dial especially on commercial radio.

103.9 WXEG is absolute garbage. Trash. Bile. Clear Channel mediocrity. They provide nothing of value when they play crappy music like Godsmack or Disturbed or Jet. 94.9 the Sound, out of Cincinnati, is the best radio station I can pick up, at least they have more variety. Of course WXEG should play more local music but their managers are more concerned with playing what they are told will be popular. If my friends and I are ever forced to listen to the radio anymore, a rarity to be sure, none of us listen to 103.9 unless they are playing an entire album at midnight or doing something else out of the ordinary. Otherwise it’s 94.9. 103.9 is a joke.

While something is always better than nothing, and I applaud those hosts who are now and have always been involved in local promotion, the issue here is really working local bands into rotation—not putting them in a “local” show in a horrible slot no one will hear. That creates and maintains this divide between local and national and discredits and devalues locally-based artists. This is why good bands who’ve had local success have to move to Nashville—Dayton won’t provide that next step. Once upon a time it did. Dayton has spawned, and still spawns, national-caliber acts. All economy is local economy. Perhaps the boys at Clear Channel will fully recognize this fact. A few bands at X-fest is a start, but what about local hip-hop, country, etc.? Again, props to these small steps, hopefully they can lead to bigger ones.

I agree with dirk. Really, after 11:30 on Sunday night? Please. A commercial station that is now off the air, WOXY, used to work local Cincy bands into their playlist, and also GBV from Dayton.

What a wonderful time for said stations to play music: Right when nobody is listening.

wxeg has been playing a local music show similar to Joe’s garage at 11:30 pm every Sunday night since Sept. 16th.
