Rhonda to play Oregon Express
I knew a woman named Rhonda once. She was a tattooed old biker chick who lived in bars, smoked like a chimney, and only dated musicians. But, she always knew how to have a good time, and she was so rock n’ roll.
Maybe my old friend Rhonda helped me make sense of the Dayton-based fun and catchy rock 3-piece, also named Rhonda, and also so rock n’ roll.
“I got so sick of those stupid long sentence names that I just wanted to name the band like I would name a person or a pet. That is where Rhonda came from,” said Rhonda bass player and founder Willis Gillen.
Rhonda (the band not the biker chick) is a refreshing new rock band in Dayton due to both their entertaining onstage antics and solid song writing.
Their sound overflows with sing along hooks, melodies, and a hip new direction for rock music centered upon having fun.
“We just want to write funny meaningless songs that will entertain, that is what were all about,” said Gillen.
Gillen, along with singer/guitarist Ben Dillalogue and drummer Justin Satinover, formed Rhonda in January motivated to be a different kind of Dayton band.
“We got tired of seeing bands who were trying to play complicated music and write deep lyrics and seemed like they were playing only for themselves. We want to play simple music meant and written for the audience. It is odd how unique that is in Dayton,” Gillen explained.
This Saturday, June 2nd, Rhonda will perform at the Oregon Express for the OE’s weekly Indie-Rock Night. This show will be an important one for the band because playing Indie-Rock night has been one of Rhonda’s main goals from the beginning.
“We have always really wanted to play Indie-Rock Night because I think it is one of the last places in Dayton to see original music,” said Gillen.
The show starts a 9pm and will also feature The Sleep and Andrew and the Pretty Punchers.
The band, which currently has only released a demo, plans to spend the summer playing shows and recording their original songs.

Sam, I think you completely misunderstood the statement. Take your time and read it again. It clearly says that Oregon Express is one of the only places left to hear original music. We are NOT a cover band and I wanted to play there BECAUSE they cater to original music. I don’t see how that could possibly be insulting. Comprehension should come before hate, Sam.By Willis

I have a problem with this statement. “We have always really wanted to play Indie-Rock Night because I think it is one of the last places in Dayton to see original music, Have you ever been to OE on a saturday night on their indie rock night? Almost all the bands play only originals. Infact i know the OE managers personally take pride in keeping non-cover bands to be thier main focus on saturday nights. Are you new to the dayton scene? I found that comment to be insulting to the club your playing at along to most other bands in dayton. sam
