Orange Willard’s new cd reviewed
I finally picked up my copy of Orange Willard’s new cd entitled Two Years Later available at Dingleberry’s in Yellow Springs and on I-Tunes.
The 2006 Dayton Band Playoff champs took their time releasing their debut record, two years in fact (hints the name), but for fans of 90’s fringed hard rock the cd was worth the wait.
For me, it was certainly a change to hear the intricacies within each recognizable track that I missed when seeing them last summer live on the Canal Street stage. Mainly the layered lead guitar tracks that could have come straight off Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden are what caught my ear first.
Talented vocalists, Rusty Paquay, sounds just as good in the studio as he does on stage. His powerful voice peeks in and out of the music with raw aggression and tone without the aid of studio tricks.
The band packed most of their hits near the beginning of the cd as the hard-rocking anthems Lazy Bones, Ugly Shoulders,, and Hole in his Eye come firing off the disc first. This is followed by an old Willard track (and my pick for the radio hit) Perfect.
Refraze studio did the production and succeeded in making the cd come off loud and spotless.
The artwork is a bit over the top as the album’s jacket is decorated with black and white picture’s of gas masks. Inside, however is a high pixeled shot of the band and the printed lyrics.
Orange Willard’s Two Years Later released out on Aztek Records is a quality pick-up especially if your familiar with the band’s music and want to hear the songs without the distractions of bar conversations and clanking bottles.
The band’s next performance is this Saturday, May 12th at the Oregon Express. I am positive that the band will have copies of Two Years Later for sale at the show.
