California’s Limbeck to play Nite Owl

Orange County, California and country rock go together about as much as Dayton, Ohio and surfing.

But, the Doghouse records 4-piece Limbeck is trying to change the perception that bands from the southwest cannot play a steel guitar.

Limbeck, who’s music is equal parts rock, pop, country, and americana, is currently on tour gearing up for their third consecutive South by Southwest appearance later this month.

They are rolling into Dayton to play the Nite Owl on Thursday, March 8th. Local favorites Captain of Industry are also on the bill.

Prior to the tour the band put the final touches on their self-titled third full-length release due out in April.

The band worked with Ed Rose (Get up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack) on the highly anticipated forthcoming release.

Limbeck’s last record, Let Me Come Home, earned them an LA music award for best americana album of the year and countless stints on the road with acts like All American Rejects and Rhett Miller.

I got to chat with frontman Robb Maclean as the band drove through a blizzard in Iowa and here is what he said.

KN - How is the ‘Big Drag’ tour going thus far?

RM - It’s been going real good. We’ve had about 2 straight months off so it’s nice to be out again. We’ve been doing a bunch of in-store shows, with a few club shows mixed in, but now we’re playing clubs all the way to SXSW. The only bum out is we’re in the middle of a blizzard in Iowa. we thought we were gonna be able to have a night off and enjoy ourselves, but all of the restaurants and theaters in town are closed. So we were stuck with easy mac dinners and a bad hotel movie.

KN - New album in April - Will it be different? How?

RM - Yes with this record we got to spend more time on the whole process, and that resulted in a lot of fun stuff. Things like ghost theremin sounds, coffee cups, and storms are on the record. As well as some fun stuff like pedal steel guitar, ukulele, and bunch of fun keyboards. I could go on. It’s still us, but we’re definitely taking some steps in different directions.

KN - Orange County is not really known for country rock, How did that happen?

RM - It may have happened because of the lack of it. We’ve made all of our records in the midwest and I guess it rubbed off on us a bit.

KN - Have you guys been to Dayton before? What can we expect from your live show?

RM - Yes, we definitely have and we love it. Our live show is electric, and I don’t just mean that literally.
