Viv Savage and the Big Finish surf onto the scene

Born this past July, local 50’s style instrumental surf rock band, Viv Savage and the Big Finish, are already turning heads around the dark corners of the Dayton music scene.

Who knew that guitar-heavy throwback instrumental surf music would make such splash in a landlocked Midwestern state?

But, Viv and the boys, Josh (drums), Ryan (bass), and Joey (organ), are infatuated with all that is the hotrod culture. Pin-up girls and vinyl record album covers decorate the band’s myspace page (myspace.com/vivsavageandthebigfinish). One might even see the band drag racing down the city streets in their 1962 Impala.

Lately, however, Viv Savage and the Big Finish have had little time for hobbies as they have kept a very hectic show schedule. The last few weeks the band had been spotted around town sharing the stage with fellow rockers Atomic Johnny and Northwest Ordinance.

The band is ready to get in the studio this spring and ease the demand from fans for a debut cd. They plan on doing the recording and artwork for the record all themselves.

Catch Viv Savage and the Big Finish this Friday at the Nite Owl. Show starts around 9:30 pm.

I had a chance to chat with Viv Savage and the Big Finish and here is what they had to say.

KN - What is a Viv Savage show like?

VS&BF - Crazy! Our last show we began with the intro music from the movie Solient Green. I think people dug it. In the future I think we will sample more old sci-fi movies like Astrozombies or Rocket Girls.

KN - Do you guys feel it is harder or easier being a instrumental band?

VS&BF - I think it is easier and harder. It is easier because we don’t have to worry about writing lyrics. But, it is harder because we have to keep the crowd’s attention without the help of a vocalist. We have to carry more stage presence because we are instrumental. People tell us we need a singer, but we like being instrumental.

KN - Do you still get chicks without a singer?

VS&BF - No we don’t get the benefit of chicks being into our band. Try picking up a chick by telling her you’re in a 50’s style surf band. They hear 50’s and think it is lame.

KN - Are there many misconceptions when you tell people you play surf rock?

VS&BF - Yea, when you say surf rock everyone thinks we sound like the Beach Boys. We get a little sick of that. It might work better on the west coast. But the good thing about sounding like us is that we play with many different styles. Even that local Beatles cover band, Ticket to Ride, whom we would love to play with by the way.
