Simply Waiting to play Canal Street Tavern

For the past six years local indie-pop kings, Simply Waiting, have been one of the most dedicated and determined acts within the Dayton city limits.

They have four East and West coast tours to their credit as well as a long and impressing list of nationally known bands they have played with including Pele, Hit the Lights, and Lyndsay Diaries. Recently the band was included on the Substream Magazine music sampler Issue # 3 that is for sale now at all Hot Topic stores.

Despite their impressive resume and grueling self-decree to succeed, the band spent half of 2006 on hiatus regrouping and recouping.

On December 29th Simply Waiting played their first show since August and their first show with the new current lineup. This roster includes Matt Shelter (guitar, vocals), Justin Smith (guitar), Josh Guild (keys), and Eric Dorney (bass).

The band is headed into the studio on February 1st to begin work on the follow-up to 2003’s The Subtle Dynamics. They hope for a summer release.

Catch the band this Saturday, January 20th at Canal Street Tavern. Also on the bill is Ruetschle.

Interview with Justin Smith from Simply Waiting.

KN - Why did you guys take such a long break?

JS - We had just gotten off a bad summer tour and the band really needed a break. In August we had a couple lineup changes. We spent a few months teaching the new guys the songs and writing new ones. We wanted to make sure we would be able to stick with this lineup for awhile.

KN - Why was the tour so bad?

JS - It was a East coast tour with shows in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and as down south as Virginia. It was just a bad tour overall. We had trailer problems, van problems, and we lost money. The only thing that kept us going was the great show we had at Canal Street Tavern the first day of the tour.

KN - What do you eat on the road?

JS - Mostly gas station food and fast food. Sometimes people will cook for us. One lady in Rhode Island cooked us three meals.

KN - As you go into the studio how do you think the new record will differ from The Subtle Dynamics?

JS - We are working with Marc McClusky who recorded our most recent demo. We work well with Marc and he does a great job of helping us develop our ideas. The new cd will be more professional and the songs will be more upbeat and rocking than the last one. I guess fun and energetic are the right words.

You forgot to mention the 2 new guys in the band Justin and Tyler Campbell. Justin plays guitar and Tyler is the drummer.
