The four corners of the Northwest Ordinance

Locally based rock 4-piece Northwest Ordinance is heading to the studio next month to record their first full length album entitled State Of Ohio.

State Of Ohio is an appropriate name for an album by a band whose members represent the four major cities in Ohio. Guitarist Pat Reilly is from Cleveland, bass player DJ Murder is from Dayton, drummer Kevin Moss is from Cincinnati, and singer/guitarist Chris Karnage is from Columbus.

With hometowns in all four corners of Ohio it is just a matter of time before Northwest Ordinance’s loud rhythms, high gained guitars, and atypical subject matter extend throughout the Midwest.

But besides Ohio, the NW Ordinance is so enthusiastic about their music that they will play anywhere anytime. They even challenge other bands and clubs to test this dedication on their myspace page (www.myspace.com/thenorthwestordinance.) asking for shows anywhere.

Those who caught the band at last October’s Dayton Music Fest know that booking the Northwest Ordinance is well worth the guarantee.

Catch the band this Friday, January 19th, at the Brewery in Troy. Also on the bill are Atomic Johnny and Viv Savage and the Big Finish

I got to chat with frontman Chris Karnage about the upcoming show and album.

KN - What will be different from the new album you will be recording as compared to your first s/t ep that is out?

CK - We have progressed a lot since our first. Our foundation is a lot stronger and a lot tighter. There will be a definite difference. We will be recording in Columbus at CDR recording studio.

KN - Are you performing the new songs from the upcoming record live?

CK - Oh yea. If we write a new song on Wednesday we will play it on Saturday. I get a thrill out of writing new songs and performing them. It is part of the enjoyment of the whole thing.

KN - What is the plan after the record is completed?

CK - We have a distribution deal we are working on and we hope to use our connections and to play anywhere and everywhere. Dayton is our base, but Dayton is running out of places to play after Elbo’s shut down.

KN - So do you think Dayton is on the downslide?

CK - No not at all, at least not in talent. I am glad to see Dayton is moving away from the revival acts and getting into original acts. In the coming year or two I predict Dayton will have a big scene. But all the talent lies in the cornfields. I know there is some kid out in the country listening to Mudhoney for the first time and just being blown away.

I got a chance to see them play at Canal Street, and they were incredible and exciting, like hearing rock and roll for the very first time all over again. NWO is absolutely on fire!
