Asylum Street Spankers at Canal Street
Besides the turkey, cranberry sauce, and football, there is one Thanksgiving weekend tradition that is celebrated every year in Dayton. That tradition is the Americana/Folk music of the Asylum Street Spankers live at Canal Street Tavern.
For the past seven years the light-hearted Austin, Texas six piece, the Asylum Street Spankers, have performed their fun and eccentric stage show in Dayton for Thanksgiving weekend.
The band has a new album for sale, entitled Mommy Says No, and a new You Tube video, called Stick Magnetic Ribbons on your SUV, creating a buzz and some controversy. So this trip to the Valley has a bigger purpose than just eating a de-feathered dead bird.
The show is Saturday, November 25th at 9:30 pm. Tickets are $15 at the door.
I spoke with founding member of the Asylum Street Spankers, Christina Marrs, about the tour and Dayton. Visit www.asylumstreetspankers.com for more info and a link to the You Tube video.
KN -How many years now have you spent Thanksgiving in Dayton?
CM - This will be our eighth. It is sort of a tradition now for us to be in Dayton during Thanksgiving. We love Dayton and Canal Street, and we always have a great time when were there.
KN - Is this trip going to be any different for you than the previous ones?
CM -Yes, actually. Our new bass player, Joshua Hoag, is from Dayton and this will be his first time back to Dayton. It is also his first tour as part of the band. So it is like his homecoming. He actually worked at Canal Street Tavern before he moved out to Austin and we caught up with him.
KN - The new You Tube video you guys posted, Stick Magnetic Ribbons on your SUV is very funny, but I imagine some people were offended. How has the feedback been about that?
CM - Rather agreeable really. Maybe only like minded people watch it, but the comment we have been getting on You Tube have been encouraging and positive. We new when we released the video that it would upset some people, and we have had a few complaints, but so far people seem to like it.
KN - Austin, Texas gets a lot of credit for its music scene. How has being from Austin helped you?
CM - I guess it has been helpful to be from Austin in the past, but for the last ten years we have been a touring band and Austin feels like just another stop for us now. It is just where we keep our stuff.
