The Rebel Set setting up
When I caught up with Dayton’s newest rock band, The Rebel Set, they were hoping around myspace sending out virtual flyers promoting their show on November 25th at Oregon Express. The band was not just saving paper, but taping into technology to let Dayton know who the Rebel Set is and that they had arrived.
The band is made up of former members of the fiery instrumental act, the TCB Hit squad, and current members of the rock band, The Buzz Brains. Originally a rock-a-billy band with two guitars and a stand-up bass, the Rebel Set has added in a drummer and moved more towards rock than billy.
The band has only one show under their belt thus far, but they are very well rehearsed. They spent a year locked inside practicing, writing and defining themselves and their sound. It was a different approach for the guys in the band, Tom Gilliam, Gavin Spencer, Jason Johantges, Adam Kempf, and Ken Hill, who in past projects jumped right into the scene and played quite often.
They recently recorded a demo at Babblefish Studios in Franklin and anticipate that in 2007 they will be finished with a full length.
Catch the band live at the Oregon Express on Saturday November 25th with Snake Oil. Visit the band online at www.myspace.com/therebelset.
I got to chat with singer/guitarist Tom Gilliam about the show and the band.
KN - How was your debut show?
TG - The crowd was incredible. About a 150 people came out and we actually made some money. We played with Akillis Green who are amazing.
KN - I hear a lot of styles and influences in your music, how would you classify yourselves?
TG - It is hard on bands to do that anymore. I guess were a rock n’ roll band. We started out as a three piece playing rock-a-billy, and I think there is still a little of that left in our music. But, I do not put rules on our sound. If you categorize yourselves then your sort of pigeon holed into one style. We don’t want to do that.
KN -Why did you guys wait so long to come out into the scene and start performing?
TG - We were trying to get things sounding as good as we could before we came out. We are really ready now and we have really developed our songs and found our way. The first show is always the hardest and now that it is out of the way it’s crunch time and we are going to hit it hard so get ready.

Tommy G., good to see you’re still rocking. I find it hard to believe you have enough time to write music and rehearse it, ya know with all of the fan mail you send me. You and the Rebel Set will always have a special place in my “army”. Love, Daniel a.k.a “Marv”By Mel

Other than a bunch of misspellings, cool article!
