The Chasing Game at Gathering Grounds
Do not call The Chasing Game a chick band even though a loud mouthed, sweet sounding chick fronts them.
There is nothing feminine about the band’s upbeat, riff heavy, hard rock music. Their sound is loud and fast with a few pop hooks and punk flare.
But with front woman, Graci Carli, on the mic they have stumbled on a combination that sets them apart from the male dominated genre. The female touch on hard rock is rare, especially locally. The Chasing Game has managed to keep aggressive music aggressive while allowing Graci to be a girl.
Branden (drummer), Tim (guitar), Erik (bass), Justin (guitar), and Graci formed the band a year and a half ago. The band came together after the break up of Branden and Tim’s last band, the very successful When Sparks Fly.
When Sparks Fly spent much of their time tirelessly touring and recording. Their schedule exhausted the band causing the band to get burned out
This time around Branden and Tim were poised to take their time. They have spent much of the last year really finding themselves and their sound.
As proof that they are ready to be taken seriously, the band used their summer to record in Chicago with Mark McClusky (Scenes From a Movie and Hit The Lights). They completed an e.p., with a release date pending while they shop the cd to labels.
If you cannot wait to hear the recordings, a sample is posted on the band’s myspace page, www.myspace.com/thechasinggame. Also catch the band this Saturday, November 18th at the Gathering Grounds (on Wilmington Pike). The show is all ages.
I had a chance to talk with the band and here is what they said.
KN - You guys are playing the Gathering Grounds this Saturday, which is an all ages club. Do you prefer to play all ages places to bars?
Branden - Yea it is great to play all ages shows. They are usually more fun because kids get more into the music and are not there just to drink.
KN - The songs on myspace sound good. Will you ever release that e.p.?
Tim -We really do not know at this time. It could come about that none of those songs will be released, but if we do release it then look for it in 2007.
KN - Do you feel that having a female lead singer makes things easier or harder on a hard rock band?
Graci - I think it is easier because it is different. We usually catch the audience off guard a bit because there are so few females playing music like this.
Branden - When you play with four or five bands at one show that are all made up of guys, I think that having a girl get up there gets us a bit more attention and wins over the fans.
