Ruetschle and The Pernice Bros.
Ruetschle (pronounced Richley) is one of the most loveable bands in Dayton and one of my I-pod’s most listened to. Their music is composed with pop precision with an emphasis on melodies and strong songwriting.
Early in 2006 the band released their 3rd full-length album entitled Exotic Destinations on Seattle’s Poptek Records. The songs on Exotic are no-nonsense pop songs that lyrically imply a feeling of innocence, but sung with terrific maturity.
Since the release of the new record, Ruetschle has been very busy promoting it and turning heads from the Midwest to the West Coast.
Ruetschle is playing at Canal Street Tavern Sunday, November 5th, with The Pernice Brothers, an equally as pop-tastic band from Boston.
I spoke with Ruetschle frontman, Mike Ruetschle, about the show and pop music.
KN – What will it be like for you to play with the Pernice Brothers?
MR - I have played with a lot of great bands, but I am most excited to play with the Pernice Brothers than any of the other bands. Joe Pernice is one of those great-underrated songwriters. His songs are so good that they make you want to stop writing. If you know what I mean.
KN – I hear some similarities between The Pernice Brothers and you guys. What do you think?
MR - Yea, in fact, I first heard of them when this magazine reviewed our cd and said we sounded like the Pernice Brothers. After I tracked down one of their cds and heard it, I was quite flattered.
KN – What (to you) makes a good pop song?
MR – The basic ingredients are defiantly a catchy melody and rhythm. It is also good to take the Bob Pollard approach and get straight to the point of the song.
KN – It just came out that Dayton is the 20th most dangerous city in America. Do you think that if everyone in Dayton listened to Ruetschle that crime would go down?
MR – Yea, Crime would be cut by 90 percent. Our music is really positive. Our last two records (before Exotic Destinations) were much darker. But lately my outlook has been more upbeat and less moody. I hope the record just exudes optimism .

Good interview! Hey how about the drummer from Ruetschle? Could he be any hotter? I don’t think so!
