Best of the Fest

Downtown Dayton was outright cinematic last Saturday night, October 7th, at the 2nd annual Dayton Music Fest. Living up to the hype as the premier area music event, hundreds of music fans packed eight downtown clubs from the Oregon District to as far west as Gilly’s, and as far north as Canal Street Tavern.

Although music began at 7:30 p.m., the largest crowds began to pack the bars by about 9:30 p.m., and stayed consistently large and enthusiastic until well after 2 a.m.

This overwhelming support of the local music scene by it’s fans is what inspired organizers Dan Clayton, Shawn Johnson, and Andy Ingram to put this fest together.

“I really believe that this is the best time ever for Dayton music, said Clayton. “This year has been another successful year for the fest and the fans are to thank, he continued.

Best Stage Banter: To fire up the crowd at Gilly’s, Swearing at Motorists front man, Dave Doughman, yelled, “This is not the Tipp City music fest. This is the Dayton Music Fest.

Loudest Band: Even without a drummer, the layers of guitar feed back and effects from instrumental noise band, Romance of Young Tigers, caused fans in the Tumbleweed to leave with a ringing in their ears.

Best Introduction: WYSO’s dj Rev Cool and the Gem City Roller Girls, gave rock band, The American Static, a warm introduction at Gilly’s. Rev Cool proclaimed that the band was a “Dayton super-group.

Most Obscure Instrument: Sleepybird, an experimental art-rock band, floored the crowd at the Trolley Stop when they used a little known instrument called a Theremin. It produces atmospheric sounds and mild feedback with radio waves.

Bar least on schedule: Most of the venues were running slightly behind, but the Foundry was nearly an hour behind schedule the entire night.

Wildest Crowd: The crowd at the Oregon Express was one of the rowdiest all night. But during the Professors set the crowd danced and drank as Professors singer Richard Stockton proclaimed, “you guys are great, last time we played here no one stood up.
