Ruetschle rocks pre-party
Most of the performers of the 2nd annual Dayton Music Festival gathered at Canal Street Tavern Friday, October 6th, for a pre-fest celebration and meet and greet. The who’s who of Dayton local music mingled over free drinks and eagerly discussed Saturday’s 2nd annual DMF.
The community-like atmosphere was highlighted by live music from the 2006 Dayton Band Playoff champion, Orange Willard, the alt-country rock of Kentucky Overflow, and the stylistic indie-pop of Ruetschle.
An energetic set by Orange Willard officially kicked off the music event of the year with a bang. Kentucky Overflow hit the stage next with a set full of slide guitar, feedback, and songs about weed, women, and how neither weed nor women are any good in Georgia.
After a rebel-rousing introduction by event planner, Dan Clayton, the Poptek Records 4-piece, Ruetschle, ended the night on a high. From start to finish the band played infectious up-beat pop tunes with front man, Mike Ruetschle, humbly singing melodious lines about falling for a girl.
Drummer, Andy Ingram, and bassists, Justin Ingram, supplied a contagious hand clapping rhythm that made it impossible to stand still. The newest addition to the band, guitarist Shawn Johnson, added a lot of thickness and layers to the other wise simplistic music.
I went home blissfully energized about the next night’s itinerary. I’m not sure if it was the bands I saw tonight that brought about the euphoria or if it was the anticipation about the 35 other bands on 7 stages that I was going to see the following night.
