This week begins the semi-finals

The 23rd annual Dayton Band Playoffs are down to the final six bands. The third round was full of surprises and the semi-final round should be equally as exciting. The six bands to make the semi-finals are The Sandals, The Cossic Art, AVO, The Smokey Basement Project, Sputnik Halo, and Orange Willard. I will keep this blog going with previews of each semi-final show as well as detailed reviews. This week begins the semi-final round and will continue the following week.

Thursday, August 17th: AVO vs. The Cossic Art
The unofficial line is AVO by seven and a half votes over The Cossic Art.

The Cossic Art are a progressive jam three-piece that is quick to cross genres and frequently goes back and forth from rock, blues, and funk. AVO is a rock band grounded by rock fundamentals. They have shown in the past to be very audience oriented and base their show around crowd reaction. This match-up will be quite interesting because of the contrast in their styles and in the type of fans that support them. AVO has the momentum after dethroning last year’s runner-up, The Sailing, in round three. This should give them the edge and will most likely propel them into the finals. The Cossic Art, however, should not be underestimated. They have also proven they can draw and win over a crowd.

Tell me who you think will win this contest?

the semi-finals represents why the Dayton music scene is a huge joke. the voting is treated as if it was prom, its popularity over talent. i would hate to have someone from out of town come to our band playoff semi finals and see this nonsense, its a shame and it is embarrassing. guided by voices are turning in there carrer graves.

Yeah, it’s easy to be a bar stool critic. So why aren’t you playing Keith? Sounds like you’d have won this thing and taken home some cash & studio time. I am playing in the finals (Smoky Basement Project) and I have to say while I don’t care for the genres of some of the acts we have played with, I do think most of the bands we played with do what they do well and deserve credit for all the hard work. One thing I have learned as a musician is that some people are not going to like you and some will, no matter how good or bad you happen to be. This contest draws a very diverse group of people, from the bands to the fans, so any night is really anyone’s guess. I am just happy to still be a part of it, and wish the best to all of the bands participating! And I hope harsh criticism doesn’t deter you guys (and gals), but only pushes you further!!! After all, we have been predicted to lose every time by Kris Neises, yet, here we are… see you on the 23rd!

Keith if you are such a great musician, where is your band in this competition? I think it says a lot of your taste in music if your top picks in the playoffs were knocked out early on. Both Cossic Art and AVO have worked hard to make it to where they are, and for a young band such as AVO to make it to the finals and beat out everyone in their way says a lot for these guys. Show some respect for AVO, they deserve to be where they are.

I went to the Dayton Band Playoffs tonight and wow. How in the heck did those two bands make it? I mean seriously I am not trying to be mean, but as a musician I just don’t get it.Those two bands were awful. The two best bands in the playoffs(G-Nome and Buddy Danko) were both knocked out by the Cossic Art. As bad as I think the Cossic Art is. AVO was worse, cmon people start voting for good music.
