Syd lives

The passing of Syd Barrett earlier this month flattened the music industry and many past and current musicians spoke about what he meant to them and to rock music. But despite what everyone else, famous or non-famous, has said or written about his passing I think Syd’s biggest fan lives in Dayton and plays in the local band Jet Kid Committee.

Dressed up to mimic his “idol, complete with eyeliner and a tucked in collared shirt, he began both of Jet Kid’s sets with a tribute to Syd Barrett. This spectacular montage even included a brief version of Interstellar Overdrive that began Wednesday’s second round competition at Canal Street Tavern.

Once the tears dried the band began an overly energetic couple sets and really set the bar high for its competitor. Jet Kid plays pumped up pop songs with anti-pop themes. Their first set spanned the bands brief history as the band played a lot of the band’s “older material. Their second set, which did repeat a few hot rockers from the first set, was equally as energetic, but included more experimental newer songs. The band is very versatile songwriters as their keyboard heavy songs have a touch of every era in rock history like 70’s punk, 80’s pop, and 90’s pop punk. The band is also very versatile musicians as on just about every song the band members switched instruments and vocal responsibilities. Songs like Might Blow Up and Battery Acid were lead by a side-burned voice with range. Other songs, such as Oh Well were led by a yellow t-shirt and yellow haired scratched up voice box with a knack for being creative with his melodies.

Playing second/fourth was Jet Kid’s competition the compassionate singer/songwriter Matt Saggio. He and “his boy, as he put it, played two acoustic/electric 6-strings and battled mellow leads back and fourth to begin their set. Matt’s coffee house, college radio pop songs were well written and performed, but were a little out of place on this particular night. Having to play after a highly energetic rock band, Matt had some trouble keeping the audience. His songs seemed mostly inspired by a girl, or girls, as he sang lines like “I miss you baby, and “I think about you everyday and night. He had me with a few songs which hit the spot, but lost me completely when he played a long medley of Led Zeppelin covers including a verse and a half of Stairway To Heaven. Although the ten minute long ode to Zeppelin showcased his nimble fingers it really bored me, and really didn’t you read the sign “No Stairway.

Matt was talented and I think his original material might have went over well with a band behind him, but I thought that Jet Kid Committee was the best band of the night. Look out for them in round three of Canal Street Tavern’s Dayton Band Playoffs
