a Wasilla resident explains Sarah Palin

51xW42yqXGL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Strange things do come to me. Sometimes, they are important documents. They might fall off of trucks? Or mysteriously slipped beneath doors. Faxed at midnight. E-mailed from remote places (like Alaska). Mailed without return addresses…..guys in trenchcoats lurking in the alley ways…..watching.

This letter came to me last night from the land of caribou and hockey moms. It was written by a resident of Sarah Palin’s hometown. She knows Sarah Palin very well. You’ll realize that by reading her letter. Have you noticed how some people in Wasilla decline to make public comments about Sarah? Is it out of loyalty? Or, something else? The press has been met with a dense wall of NO COMMENT when making inquiries about Palin in Wasilla. One might wonder why?

The author of this letter has asked that her name be kept confidential. I have checked it out and I believe that this document is the genuine article….I Googled the author. This letter was forwarded from an Alaskan (and McCain/Palin supporter) to a friend of mine in Sitka, Alaska, then on to me. That’s the unbroken chain of correspondence from Wasilla to you, the readers of this DDN blog.

Much hay has been made during the Republican National Convention about Sarah Palin’s executive experience. This letter illuminates some of the aspects of Palin’s experience that have not been described in much detail. Up until now. Read it. There’s a lot that we can learn about Sarah Palin…..

Dear friends,

So many people have asked me about what I know about Sarah Palin in the last 2 days that I decided to write something up …

Basically, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have only 2 things in common: their gender and their good looks. :)

You have my permission to forward this to your friends/email contacts…

ABOUT SARAH PALIN

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a “babe”.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She’s smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported?

The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later—to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s surplus, borrow for needs.

She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal—loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated” her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help.

The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work.

Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects—which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance—but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”.

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state initiative that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT

.”Hockey mom”: true for a few years

.”PTA mom”: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since .

“NRA supporter”: absolutely true .social conservative: mixed.

Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional).

.pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it.

.”Pro-life”: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation.

.”Experienced”: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000.

.political maverick: not at all

.gutsy: absolutely!

.open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions.

.has a developed philosophy of public policy: no .”a Greenie”: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.

.fiscal conservative: not by my definition!

.pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards.

.pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents .pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla’s history.

.pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools…

Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that “Bad things happen when good people stay silent”. Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings…

Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that’s life…

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s attempt at censorship…

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS

I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall—they are swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my “about 5,000”, up to 9,000. The day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

Fair enough Mark. I am a former liberal who wised up. First and foremost a conservative, I also am not thrilled with the GOP. Maybe Sarah will ultimately let us all down; most politicians do. But should we not give her the opportunity to grow into her role, with the hope that she will truly help transform Washington? If we cut the legs off of every up and coming politician willing to run the gauntlet, we will all fail. Whatever dissapointment is aimed at Bush and his administration, let’s remember the tests that he was put to, and appreciate the fact that he has not buckled under the pressure. History will judge him more kindly than you might think. And just how do you fight a war on terrorism? It’s a completely different war than anyone has ever fought. It requires new tactics that none of us relish. But that doesn’t mean we should disgard them. Islamic jihadists laugh at our squeemishness about Gitmo, waterboarding, and so-called domestic spying. They cut off heads and blow innocent people up without blinking an eye. However, they do understand now that we are willing to take them on anywhere and everywhere, and they are paying a heavy price. Would Al Gore or John Kerry have been so committed? I seriously doubt it. It takes a special, obstinate type of leader to disregard the noise from within and without, and do what needs to be done. That is how Abe Lincoln was able to win the Civil war, while getting ridiculed by his own cabinet and virtually all the journalists of his day. Personnaly, I will always appreciate Bush for sticking to his guns and putting the terrorists on the defense. In doing so, he made it much easier for the future leaders of our country, whether it’s Obama or McCain.

This is a stale thread so I think I can be forgiven if, instead of responding directly to Raoul and TRS I’d like to talk about myself. I’m a 4th generation Iowa Republican who left the farm and spent a decade doing piecework in the world’s largest tire factory in Des Moines. I left the Republican party because of Nixon’s Southern Strategy which enticed the racist South (and the racist Catholic North) into becoming Republicans. Whatever you see middle America as being, my life makes me a part of that. I am not a pacifist. I am a beef-eating Norwegian-American who loves the NBA and who used to watch football until Texas rules turned it into a steroid-driven bloodsport. Whatever truths you have that come from your conservatism, I share with you. But those beliefs you hold that are Republican, but not philosophically conservative, separate us. I would call that the B.S. factor. I’m very critical of the Democratic party for having caved in to phony conservativism as expressed by the Bushies, the shallow ideologues who have never earned a dollar from an honest day’s work, who were born on third base, stole home and thought they hit a home run. If you are a genuine conservative, you should be aghast at Bush’s spying ways. Privacy is the ultimate conservative value, and we have less of it because conservatives no longer prize that which we used to hold most dear. Sarah Palin does not respect your privacy. From selling rape kits to rape victims, to using her powers as governor to conduct vendettas against state employees, to her willingness to tell boldfaced lies about her record, this woman is deceitful, powermad, and a horrible example of conservative values. There is nothing left of Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt’s Republican party. This is the party of big business, religious bigotry, and other self-aggrieved groups who use power to force their beliefs down the throats of others. Before November I predict you’ll both be forced to denounce Palin. She is not who you think she is, and she is most certainly not someone who shares your love of this country. She is a woman who wishes to impose her values on the rest us, and I for one treasure the Constitution far more than I do whichever edition of the Bible you choose to subscribe to.

Mark, I think Bill Clinton scored the most points against the GOP in the convention. Biden’s comments were the usual stuff we expect from both sides. Prose, my hats off to you for your wonderful sense of sarcasm. Rereading all the comments,I guess we have all had our say. Since the last post, we have created yet another ridiculous bailout, this time for Freddie and Fannie, and now the Big 3 automakers are lining up for theirs. If anyone is interested in huge scandals on the part of giant corporations (like Enron) they should look into Freddie and Fannie and while at it, the UN’s snub of the coalition to oust Saddam (Oil for Food?). But, since the left writes all the news and tells us all who to hate and who not to, it’s good to know that a forum like this one exists to provide some of us a chance to mention some things that don’t get media play because they don’t fit into the agenda. McCain was supposed to pick another white, rich, conservative that the left could tee off on. Instead, he picked Sarah Palin, and the left is caught in a juicy box of contradiction. It is interesting how the ‘progressives’ are exposing themselves as intolerants.

Alternative ultra liberal resource attributed to the Obama campaign from an unnamed source. Sorry Mark - may look bad from the liberal perspective, but she’s having a positive impact and the more the liberals attack, the greater the backlash so from my perspective, keep the slash and burn stuff coming.

The “Sambo” story came from an interview conducted with the waitress by an alt-news weekly reporter, not a blogger. And now today we learn that Palin collected per diems while living in Wasilla, and that her entire family traveled with her at the state’s expense on countless occasions. Everytime someone turns over a rock in Alaska, new allegations of graft or personal entitlement emerge. We now also know that under Palin the City of Wasilla charged rape victims for the cost of the rape kits used to identify their attackers. And there are now TWO videos of Palin clearly defending the Bridge to Nowhere. What exactly has Palin accomplished that’s held up under scrutiny? More and more that’s looking like a big fat zero. McCain didn’t vet her, and with each passing day the magnitude of that error is becoming more apparent.

Best evidence indicates that the “Sambo” story was planted by a left wing blogger. Even the Daily Kos pulled it down. Come on Mark - your better than that. I’d say the questions about Trig reflect more about the writers than anything else. Pity this kind of stuff floats around. PS - I’m not a fan of the Obama mendrasa stories either. All garbage

How did she keep her pregnancy such a secret-? why did no one/no photos depict her as pregnant-? why was Bristol out of school for so long(with mono?)-? & lastly I believe I read that Bristol officially was transfered to school in Anchorage- is this true? Why is/was her only proof that Bristol is not Trig’s biological mother that Bristol was a couple of weeks pregnant at the time of Trig’s birth, rather than something more verifiable & concrete.

Maybe it’s because I grew up as a Republican farm kid, but I also appreciate Raoul’s comments. But it has to be confusing to be a conservative today. Thanks to George Bush, the Republican party is anything BUT conservative (lowering taxes when it magnifies a budget deficit is NOT conservative). John McCain, as has been pointed out, used to be a conservative maverick, but now he just panders a lot. Frankly, it’s hard not to believe that McCain has simply spent too much time in DC. It gets to everyone eventually. In fact, that’s why Barack and Michele Obama decided that this was the year to run, before they spent too much time in DC and became corrupted by all the big monied interests like most other members of Congress. I watched every minute of the RNC b’cast by PBS, and I have very mixed feelings. I’m glad McCain understands that Bush is reviled for his horrible stewardship of our country’s resources, but after four nights of being slimed for holding different political views, it’s hard not to scream back. I think everyone here watched BOTH conventions. The Democrats attacked the Republican record lightly, I think Joe Biden got in the most shots. The Republicans, otoh, attacked the Democrats. Not Democratic policies, but the people themselves. And they told a LOT OF LIES. Obama only told one (I watched the Saddleback show and McCain clearly didn’t say that $4.9 million was middle class). Obama is not raising taxes on anyone in this thread, just on the top five percent of wage earners, and those with massive unearned wealth. Calling that raising taxes on everyone is profoundly dishonest, but that was the tone of the RNC. Mitt Romney stood up said what could never be said in a bar without someone taking a chair to his head. DHS used the most corrupt law enforcement officer in the Twin Cities to stir up the anarchists, who were already sufficiently augmented by paid informers and agitators. By the end of the week I think everyone in the Twin Cities felt soiled by our guests: the anarchists, the liars, and the RNC organizers. Obama is talking issues, Republicans are talking dirt. As one who was highly critical of Palin, I can say that I got my talking points from gossip blogs, not Democrats. The Democratic party didn’t add one bit of tinder to the Palin eruption — it all came from former rural Americans like me who instantly recognized Palin for what she is: an intolerant bigot who, it’s just been learned, loudly responded in a restaurant to news of Obama’s primary victory by saying “Sambo beat the b*tch.” Joe Biden has proven himself with a lifetime of service to his country. Palin has yet to do anything for Alaska that wasn’t premised on partisanship or opportunism. Republican voices raised in opposition to her would do much for my worries that Republicans consistently put party and ideology before country. That was never true before Nixon’s Southern Strategy, but now that the party of Lincoln is being run by former Dixiecrats, well, I’ve come to expect the worst, and am rarely disappointed.

Built a fire, eh Vic? One quick point (and its not intended to sound preachy). It would demean Jesus to claim him as either a liberal or conservative, right or left. He fits in no human boxes. Social justice is important and He emphasized this point time and time again; but, if that is one’s total perspective of Him then something is being missed. Virtue is important, but if that is the only aspect you see as worth pursuing, then the total picture isn’t being seen. If you evangelize; yet, don’t seek to do as he says, His message hasn’t got through. Finally, I appreciate your seeking to keep discourse about debate, not personal insult. I sincerely believe Americans agree about far more things than we disagree. At the same time, to coin a phrase, we can disagree without being disagreeable.

Thanks Raoul, for your very instructive post concerning the need to work together to solve our problems. Your temperate and unbiased observations of how the Roe v. Wade decision has “almost destroyed all American families”, was instructive. I’m also full of remorse for being, in your words, “proud to have destroyed the American family, American neighborhoods, the public school system, the sanctity of life, and have ingrained a whole new generation of children into thinking our country is to blame for everything, and are trying to get us to believe we are destroying the planet.”That’s a whole lot to be guilty of, and for your wish to work together to repair it is downright generous. I should have never applauded those crooks at Fannie Mae for misuse of funds. And, to have encouraged those large salaries given to Hollywood Liberals, I was just plain wrong. Same for the high salaried, liberal big media conglomerate types, my fault. To criticize the energy companies and corporate farmers for pollution was terrible. I wasn’t keeping my eye on the global warming that as you pointed out, also seems to be happening on Mars. Guess I’ll have to take your suggestion and start talking to more conservative college students. As I reflect on how much destruction I’ve caused, I even feel the need to say I’m ashamed of Vick for accusing you of having “selective amnesia,” and for saying John Edwards was more savvy than you on some matters. I’d sort of surmised he was a progressive (what liberals try calling themselves now) but, says he’s an Independent. And even though that sounded like an offended Liberal to me, I would never question his being a past McCain admirer who could be swayed to his side by a persuasive appeal. All the venom spewed on blogs, mostly by “Liberals” as you pointed out, has chastened me. It’s time to let independent thinkers like you and Vick carry the discourse. Happy trails.

Thanks to you as well, Vic. I am not a blogger by nature, and only post online through the DDN. I am a little taken aback at the venom found in these blogs, mostly by the left. Why all the hatred? If we could start all over, would we not all strive for the type of government we now have, warts and all? We need to work together now more than ever. America was built on people doing and giving, not on taking and complaining. Am I a man out of touch or a man out of time? Well, this has been a great exchange, and thanks again.

Raoul, thanks for articulating your viewpoints in such a manner. You open with a touch of subtle sarcasm, which I liked a lot. Then you enumerated your points with a steadiness and lack of stridency that sets an excellent example for this forum. Personal attacks between posters who wouldn’t know each other if they met on the street drag down our level of discourse. You raised it with your post. Much obliged.

Prose, thank you for your kind words. Now, let me tell you why we conservatives disagree with you. We have witnessed over the last generation a landslide of legislation built upon the creation of victims everywhere we turn. The Civil Rights movement was necessary and right. But, Liberals turned it into something much more; they came up with the great idea that if we Democrats toss out enough crumbs to those at the lower end of the economic scale, we would create millions of future Democratic voters. Underlying this whole ‘do goody’ philosophy was the notion that you poor people will never make it on your own, so don’t even bother trying. It is a notion that still shines through the Democrat’s platform today. The Welfare state was born, and with it the all out assault on minority families. Then came forced busing, and the destruction of our neighborhoods. Then came Roe Vs. Wade, a legally flawed Supreme Court decision that has almost destroyed all American families. But the do-goodies were just getting started. Not being satisfied with families, liberals campaigned vigorously to end the Viet Nam war (I was one of them). When the war ended, the real killing began in Cambodia, but we don’t talk about that much. Liberals champion the Che Gueveras’s of the world(a murderous thug if ever there was one) and mock our own soldiers who defend us. Liberals are disgusted with no-bid contracts with Haliburton (except when Bill Clinton hands them out). Liberals make victims out of everyone who can cast a vote. Liberals insist on cramming homosexuality in our faces and when we object, we are labeled intolerant. Well excuse me, but I could care less what anyone does in the privacy of their home, but don’t force your way of life on me and my children. That’s not intolerance, that’s just being a protective parent. What if my child is gay, you ask? I would love them just the same. Liberals claim a tolerant high ground that falls apart under scrutiny. Just ask any conservative college student. Liberals complain about huge paychecks for corporate big wigs and Big Oil executives, but don’t bat an eye when Fannie Mae executives give themselves million dollar golden parachutes, nor do they care that left-leaning media comglomerates also take home some nice paychecks, or that vacuous Hollywood movie stars make a pretty decent living as well. No, it’s only those nasty big energy corporations (that supply us with our everyday needs) that liberals have a problem with. So, Prose, maybe you are proud to have destroyed the American family, American neighborhoods, the public school system, the sanctity of life, and have ingrained a whole new generation of children into thinking our country is to blame for everything, and are trying to get us to believe we are destroying a planet that we barely understand (isn’t planet Mars warming also?), but I can tell you that your kind could use a little more reflection on your do-goody nature and try to look at the long term consequences of what you are trying to accomplish. I would ask you, if this country is so screwed up as you liberals would make us believe, if this is not a republic where the people govern themselves protected by a Bill of Rights and based upon each of us being equal, with the right to freely choose our leaders and express our views publicly without retribution, and where freedom and liberty are the cornerstones of our existence, bought by oceans of blood sacrificed by young men and women who serve a greater cause, then don’t you think we should tear it all down and start over? That way we could build a country like Cuba, or China, where we will all be happy and the government will provide for us each according to our needs. This country is truly the last, best hope for mankind. It is far from perfect, but we can make it better. Give up the name calling and reflect a little on your contributions to the argument, because we will have to work together to make it better.

Well TRS, since being a dung beetle yourself, you probably do know a good bit about where you abide. But, you and your party trying to paint yourselves as Simon Peter the fisherman…whoa.. is a testament to your lemming status in the “let them eat cake party”. The R’s continue to cut JTPA dollars. How does that train new workers to “fish”? Your messiahs Reagan & Bushes I & II filled the streets and alleys with the mentally impaired by defunding treatment and mental hospitals. Nice catch! The military (I have a niece who served 3 tours in Iraq and earned the Bronze Star) has been brought to a recklessly overworked state, now needing to have a privately funded Blackwater army do much of the heavy lifting. Oh, and for about 3-4 times the cost of regular Army forces. Haliburton gets no bid contracts, no problem giving THEM the fish. We used to have a progressive income tax in this country, the rich and corporations also paid taxes. Now, they establish off-shore shelter companies in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands and elsewhere to avoid them. Choices? You bet! Haliburton recently relocated their corporate headquarters to Dubai. A very patriotic gesture, especially considering we have no extradition treaty with them. It’s called avoiding prosecutorial inconveniences. “My side” started the mocking? Obama & Biden were the first to credit not the VP, but your VP candidate, and tell the press to lay off Palin. If you think executive experience is being mayor of Wasilla, who has a city manager who does the majority of the actual work, you’ve clearly never been exposed to city politics. If a town of 5,000 can really be called a city. Finally, yes I do think phony patriotism, people who vote dry and drink wet, pronounce their faith on Sunday’s only to act like sinning profligates the other days of the week are wrong. This isn’t about different solutions for solving problems. You guys won’t even admit there ARE problems. And if you think the federal government is only good at military operations, your ilk will continue the downward economic spiral, State Department& CIA blunders that are inching us into a potential WW III, Federal Reserve Board, removal of financial regulations and oversight that have put this country on the precipice of a full blown depression, and accelerate the environmental disaster being pursued by the big oil, lumber, mining, chemical industries and corporate farmers. You know them, they were the GUYS holding “hockey moms for Palin” signs at your pathetic convention. Even your sitting President was so busy “overseeing storm preparations” (from the White House) he couldn’t attend? This is not about policy differences, this is about the concerted attack on American values, culture and way of life your leaders have been promoting for most of the last 50 years. Your man Eisenhower warned us all about it. That was about the same time you started your campaign to make liberal a dirty word. Well, from my viewpoint most of the greatest religious leaders in history, including Jesus of Nazareth were liberals. And it’s time to drive you money changers from the temple of American democracy. And take your “piles of hypocrital dung” with you.

For my two cents, I believe the letter writer and know it took guts to put that info forward. She’ll take a lot of heat for it — as is already evident from comments made here. I’ve been in the hot seat myself for telling the truth. Vic, thanks for informing us.

Wow! I do enjoy a lively discussion like this one! So many points are being made here…I’ll try to respond to a few. I’m an independent, the kind of voter that John McCain must sway if he stands any chance of winning this election. They are portraying him as a “maverick.” I thought of him as somewhat of maverick when he ran in 2000 and got trashed by George W. Bush tactics that were so slimy that they don’t bear repeating here. I liked McCain in 2000 but then he made nice with the people who slimed him and his maverick ways since have been mostly retired in my view. Many things that he opposed are now things he claims to support? His current attempt to portray himself as an outside the beltway voice for change strikes me as somewhat ridiculous? All this stuff we are talking about on this blog will make for some great books in the not so distant future. Wouldn’t you agree? Those books will be written from every possible viewpoint and I look forward to reading them! Funny that you should mention the Obama book. Have you read it? How would I review it uncritically? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of reviewing it? I’m not sure that I have the stamina to make it through that one. I can’t review a book if I can’t read the entire thing. I’ll have to work on that…thanks to everyone who has commented so far…

Did anyone really catch the point on which the author of the letter and Ms Palin disagreed? I believe it was the Librarian of a city of 5,000 (at the time). What Greater Dayton “cities” are about that size (and “cities” is in quotes there because in Ohio you have to have a population of 5,000 to incorporate in the first place)?

Victor, you may not like President Clinton, but you are a decided liberal and your blog reflects that. I tell you what, why don’t you review uncritically “Obama Nation”? Folks, Snopes has its place but it has a reputation for being left leaning. Maybe this book is the real deal, maybe not. But it does seem like the left is doing all they can to discredit the Alaska Governor.

OK campers - read the statement at Snopes - all Ms. Kilkenny states is that “Yes - it is her letter.” The basis in fact is still questionable. In other words - if David Esrati was asked for his “honest” opinion on Mike Turner how honest would it be? Could it “possibly” be tainted from prior interactions that were less than pleasant (for both parties I might add). BTW - since when did the DDN site for BOOK reviews start posting politic blog items of questionable veracity - oh wait - nevermind…

Vic, I never mentioned anything about selective amnesia, you did. Don’t be so touchy. I simply tried to make the point the media tends to destroy conservatives caught in scandals. Liberals get destroyed too, but somehow they find redemption (from the media) and the next thing you know they are getting promoted, booked on cable news shows, write books with huge advances, and are elevated back to media darlings. Not so with conservatives. They tend to take their lumps and dissapear. But just the same, I am relieved you feel about Clinton the way you do. And you won’t have to wait long before John Edwards will be resurrected. Do not, however, hold your breath for Trent Lott or Mark Foley.

Vic, to quote Shakespeare: “doth protest too much, methinks.” While I have not read every post and article that you have written in your career, a cursory glance of your posts on this blog over the last 2 years leads one to believe that you lean toward the left quite a bit, especially in the last few months, so please forgive me if I have offended you. There is nothing wrong with being liberal or progressive as Liberals want to call themselves, just admit it and stop the charade of being objective.

Per Snopes, they verified via phone the letter was written by an Ann Kilkenny of Wasilla. Quoting her she said she “wanted to offer her information about her personal experiences.” I realize it tickled the ears of those who wanted to hear negative things about Gov Palin; yet, does the opinion of one person now become accepted as the end all? Apparently for some it does. Blowfly is right in that there is much more to be heard from her. The difference is he hoping beyond hope that she will fail and I tend to believe she will handle herself quite well. Time will tell. Prose - the context of “mocking” began with your side. When a sitting Govenor was announced as VP, the mocking began. The Democratic talking points belittled her as a small town mayor, lacking in experience. Conversely that is implicidly inviting one to look at the opponents background. There is nothing wrong with being either a small town mayor or community organizer; but, a comparison of the two is certainly fair game and there is little doubt one has the executive experience component and the other does not. Finally, I’m not buying this “mean Republican” stuff at all. Our world views are quite different. One could go into great detail but surfice it to say I believe it better to teach people to fish rather than just give them a fish. For those that can’t be taught, they deserve our help. I also doubt government’s ability to do anything well except protect the country, aka the military. Finally, while we’d like to do it all, there aren’t enough rich people and corporations to tax to make this happen. Choices have to be made. I watched the convention and didn’t see anyone claiming a corner on anything. I heard Senator Obama referred to as a patriot and to be fair the same was said at the Democratic convention about Senator McCain. Since when is advocating support for such things as defense of country, God, patriotism and economic growth a bad thing? It is not an either/or thing; rather it is a matter of opinion of which is the best way to do it. I am truly sick of this intolerance claim - it is so cliche. What you are really saying is “if I don’t believe as you then I am intolerent”. That my friend is a load of dung.

Poor Bob, Raoul, TRS, Fred, JT and the rest…..you’ve never let the facts bother you before, why start now. Just remain ditto heads, blame the “liberal media” and turn up Rush and Sean. The economy is great, the market is booming, your house value keeps rising as fast as your wages, we’ve turned the Persian Gulf into a democracy, won the war because of the surge, America is still a shining beacon on the hill, we’re loved everywhere by everybody, we don’t need a Constitution because Dick and GW know how to keep us safe, screw the environment, “drill baby drill” and those sick and poor people are that way because they don’t pray to the right God, or are just plain lazy. Life must be so easy when the REAL GOD is on your side. Keep the blinders on and just keep building prisons and selling us AK-47’s. But don’t dare show them kids condums. Just grab a six-pack and head to the woods for some fun with Sarah P.

Some facts that are easily verified: The second Sarah Palin became Mayor of Wasilla, she surprised the entire town by firing some key officials. She didn’t say she would do this in her campaign, but it is now clear that was her agenda from the start. Ditto when she became Governor of Alaska and successfully stole the credit for the reforms the Democrats had been trying to get throught the legislature past the corrupt Republican establishment. You can say that Palin cleaned up Alaska, or you can talk to Alaskans and learn that the Democrats were already doing that, and that Palin stole their thunder. Even other Alaska Republicans don’t think she’s ready to lead our nation. If you watched the RNC video on her last night, you would never know that the incumbent governor of Alaska that she defeated was Frank Murkowski, a corrupt Republican. Even that wasn’t a big upset as Murkowski only got 19% of the vote despite having been a long-serving U.S. Senator before that. Murkowski’s Chief of Staff was later convicted of numerous corruption charges. Compared to Frank Murkowski, Jack Abramoff’s a straight shooter!

Why do i find myself not believing this story? Don’t you think that if this story was true, it would be all over the news. They seem to love Sara Palin stories these days. A random letter being sent to a Dayton Daily News reviewer? Come on, people. The internet is a funny thing. You can find any answer you want to any question you want, if you search hard enough. People need to have some comment sense, which is sadly lacking in most Americans. Next thing you know, we’ll be believing those emails promising millions from a prince half way across the world….only if we gave up out bank account numbers. Wake up, people!

Gee Whiz, Raoul! Talk about a selective memory. You state: “After all, the all out destruction of politicians the media doesn’t like is reserved only for those nasty conservatives.” Didn’t a Democratic presidential candidate get devoured by the media about his affair just the other day? I think John Edwards might be somewhat more savvy about this alleged media bias that you are. Selective amnesia, Raoul? In regard to Bill Clinton, while his bloated shadow has loomed over this campaign for a long time, regular readers of this blog know of my deep affection for William Jefferson Clinton. I can’t stand him, Raoul. If that is media bias then I plead guilty!

Now, Bob…Barack Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961. Hawaii became a state in 1959. None of the other items you mention are based in fact - only insinuation. Why is it acceptable to toss inacccuracies after perceived inaccuracies? Secondly, columnists do not have to be impartial. Columnists are allowed and encouraged to express an opinion. None of this reflects my feelings on Obama or Palin - only my attempts to find facts so that I might make an informed opinion.

This letter seems convincing, if only from the point of view of a jealous acquaintance. But, if true, the vultures will eventually circle and the truth will come out. Kind of like when the popular Bill Clinton found himself accused of rape, molestation, etc. Except in this case, our mainstream media will have a much higher level of interest, and will want their hatred avenged with an all out effort to take her and her family down. Of course, we still have Bill around. After all, the all out destruction of politicians the media doesn’t like is reserved only for those nasty conservatives.

JT, I’ll assume your comments are due to a lack of information about my work? Over the past dozen years I have interviewed 1200+ authors on the radio and/or for the Dayton Daily News. I interviewed the late Charlton Heston. Was he a liberal? I interviewed Congressman John Kasich. He just spoke at the RNC. He wants to be the next Republican governor of Ohio. Another liberal? I interviewed Ted Nugent who finds his greatest joys in warm guns. Not exactly a liberal- his publisher is the right-wing Regnery Press. I’ll admit that I have also interviewed Democrats. There was John Glenn for example. You can call him liberal. I call him an AMERICAN HERO. Did you miss my interview with Jenna Bush? She is the daughter of that guy who John McCain couldn’t bear to mention last night. You know, the Republican President of the United States? Jenna Bush and I had a lovely conversation. When I asked her about her dad she said that “he is really smart.” Knowledge is power JT. Thanks, for writing!

Appreciated Mark’s observations and the courage of the Wasilla resident, in particular. It continues to baffle me how Republican’s have managed to paint themselves as the sole proprietors of our nation’s defense, faith in God, patriotism, economic growth and conservatism. Their actions are the antithesis of these positions. They are intolerant of others beliefs and faiths, take unilateral steps to violate our sacred Constitution &, international laws, plunge us into debt, illegal conflicts, and have instituted policies which make our citizens targets of violence and ridicule worldwide. They appear to respect life only between conception and birth. After that it’s social Darwinism and plunder. As I watched speaker after speaker at their convention ridicule “community organizers” I thought, what they think Jesus was? Or Moses? How do they reconcile plundering the national treasure for war and corporate profits as a righteous and religious undertaking? Cutting assistance to the poor, the homeless, the mentally ill, and those without healthcare and jobs is not what good samaritans and citizens do. Where is their moral fiber, balance and sense of honor? THEY are the tax and spend profligates who embrace the apocalypse. Mocking those who sacrifice their time and toil to help others is “faith based”? These self-anointed defenders of liberty do not represent the Judeo-Christian tenets as I understand them. We are a nation being destroyed by their cultural, social and economically predatory compulsions. For the first time in my life I question if this country can survive these flag- draped hypocrites. Hopefully, the courage of persons like the woman who wrote about the real Palin from Wasilla, will nurture us back to the truth. Stop waving your Good Book and start reading it.

I have seen this letter making the rounds as well. I’m think it’s more aimed at reassuring the choir than to convert anyone. To me the most telling sign of the “problem with Palin” is that after almost a week she has not had a single substantive conversation with anyone in the media or put forth any statement on her positions. To me that cites her lack of experience more than anything. For example, Sunday Obama, Biden, and McCain are all appearing on the major network political shows. Where’s Palin? Probably holed up in some hotel room somewhere trying to find Ukraine on a map. If she’s so experienced why are they so afraid of her actually talking to anyone? I’m mean they are even keeping her away from Fox and Hannity, et al. They are terrified of what would happen.

The fact that she was 1 of 100 opposed to her should give us some idea about the source’s point of view. Conversely, saw a friend of Sarah Palin interviewed last night from Wasilla and I doubt she has the same opinion or take. Considering the nature of the internet, I would imagine there will be internet posts which reflect another point of view supportive of her - will you put that out there Vic? Tell me Mark, how many of those whose ran planes into the Twin Towers were Christian? How many who died on the plane were Christians? You comment about who is the enemy really is twisted.

Vick, this one’s going around the intertubes faster than the earlier rumors about Palin’s baby. Unlike the earlier rumors, this one is from an actual resident of Wasilla (yes, I checked her out too, and the one thing about this email that’s indisputable is that it IS from someone who knows Palin personally). This morning the Mpls Star Tribune is jammed with letters to the editor about Palin, and to my surprise over 90% of them are very critical of her. I guess I’m not the only rural American who moved to a city to get away from the Sarah Palins of this world. Not while I was growing up in the ’60s, but later, after I left, my small town in Iowa came under assault from people like Sarah Palin. Smug Christians who KNEW their one particular church was right, and everyone else’s was wrong, wrong, wrong — and damned to eternal hell to boot. They won a few school board seats, my hometown got a taste of what they were about, and threw them out of office. Not every small community is that rational because the natural balance in rural communities was disrupted by the the revolution in agriculture that let fewer and fewer farmers produce more and more food. If everyone had to return to the place of their birth, I think we’d find this country is pretty well-balanced. Sadly, rural liberals like me move to our cities, and city conservatives move to the country, further polarizing our nation. I am comfortable with the fact that Obama is way to my right, a true centrist who will CONTINUE to work across the aisle with Republicans to get our nations’ needs met. I have zero confidence that Sarah Palin would do anything other than quickly put together an even bigger “enemies” list than she already has. As for McCain, I kept pushing him in the late ’90s, but the same people who love Palin now were infatuated with George W. Bush then, and the people who approved of Rove’s savaging of McCain then are McCainiacs now. Frankly, I think the Republican party is very confused about what they really believe, probably because — thanks to Fox News — they don’t really know what’s going on in the world. If, like Rudy Giuliani, you think Islamo-fascism is our biggest threat, vote for John and Sarah. But if you think Christo-fascists like Palin are a bigger problem for the U.S., vote for Barack and Joe.
