will John McCain dump Sarah Palin?

51IgFpJ5e+L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

That decisive maverick John McCain impulsively named Sarah Palin, a virtual unknown, to be his running mate the other day, right here in Dayton. The fallout was immediate. And it keeps getting worse.

Palin is slated to give a speech tonight at the Republican National Convention in Saint Paul. It better be good.

The odds that McCain will pull the plug on Palin are increasing. It’s apparent that McCain failed to properly vet his running mate. The closet is open now. The skeletons are rattling.

Here’s my question. Will McCain take a page from George McGovern and unceremoniously dump Palin? McGovern dumped Thomas Eagleton quicker than you can say shock treatment back in 1972. Will McCain pull another maverick move and jettison Palin before that pile of skeletons comes rattling onto the GOP’s heaving deck?

What do you think? I’m not asking if McCain should dump her - I’m asking if you think that he will toss her overboard before the sharks come leaping past the mast of this foundering GOP flagship? Will he? Or, won’t he?

As more info comes spewing out of Alaska Palin is looking less and less like an asset and more like a boat anchor chained to McCain’s ankle. With 2 months to go before the election there is lots of time for the proverbial feces to hit the fan. I don’t think it will be a pretty sight when the mud starts to stick…

She’s every bit qualified to be on the ticket, even more than Obama. She’s the only one with executive experience. What a bunch of blow hard liberals all of you. You guys are running scared and try paint a picture of her as being incompetent. Well I got news for you, this is the winning ticket come November. I have no doubt in my mind, this country will pick John McCain and Sarah Palin. God Bless America!

With the msm too lame to do any real investigative journalism, and the folks in Alaska too intimidated to talk due to fear of retribution from the Gov., I think McBush keeps her and sails into the WhiteHouse.

Interesting that you would justify Russia’s invasion of Georgia - it seems you agree with Obama’s 1st statement that their was moral equilivancy. Guess if any nation which ticks of Russia its ok with you if they invade. Comparing representation of constituents vs executive experience is a comparison of apples and oranges - it just doesn’t work. If it is the political aspect of representation you are looking at Gov Palin has a 80% approval rating from Alaskans. Aside from Mayor Palin, currently we are talking about Gov Palin, someone was charged with managing a 2.9 Billion budget for the state of Alaska. The fact that she can creditably make the case that she has greater qualifications than Senator Obama seems to be driving some crazy. I would agree that last night was only the beginning. She has to prove herself on the campaign trail and in debates. As with all the candidates, they will have their good days and their bad days. Its obvious some believe or hope she falls short but she surprised many last night.

It’s been 5, 6 days since Palin was picked? She has yet to talk to a single reporter, or given a single interview. She even canceled her appearances at RNC events. I guess you really can run and hide … .

The experience issue is astonishing to me to the extent that the republicans have been willing to openly endorse arguments that no one can take seriously and border on fraud. According to them, being a small town mayor qualifies you to pilot the space shuttle, and being a US senator is like being a greeter at Wal-Mart. Setting aside the absurdity, McCain’s only experience is as a senator. How does this argument help them? I thought her speech was very well written, full of clever little put downs, and despite being very nervous she did a decent job of delivering the speech. You could tell that her TV broadcasting background helped her, she can at least read a teleprompter. Very little of substance, just her story and what a great guy McCain is. The crowd helped her tremendously. I think she has bought her self some time, but there is still a great deal of skepticism that she will need to overcome. The real tough job starts after she gets out from under the protective wing of the convention and she has to stand on her own and show she can really talk national/global policy. I can’t imagine she is the least bit prepared for this task. They are not going to be able to baby her along for much longer. She also still has yet to defend herself from all her Alaska baggage. The other problem her lack of experience presents is that she lacks the credibility to perform in the traditional attack dog VP role against Biden or Obama. Judging by the recent polls it looks like people are not buying into Primetime Palin. Obama up 15 in Iowa, 12 in Minnesota, he’s up almost everywhere. It’s too early to know if these numbers reflect Obama’s convention bounce or McCain/Palin convention flop, but I suspect that it’s a little of both at this point. By the way, Mark’s right about Georgia poking Putin in the eye for months. They baited Russia into attacking thinking NATO would come to the rescue. I bet Palin knows all about this given how close Alaska is to Russia and all. Politics - the best form of free entertainment that there is.

I certainly don’t think she’s a featherweight, even if she is fighting way above her weight class. But let’s compare apples with apples. Wasilla? 5,000 people when she was Mayor. Each of Illinois’ 59 State Senators represents over 200,000 constituents, and in Obama’s case the actual size of that Chicago district wouldn’t be any bigger than greater Wasilla. Obama, unlike the mercurial John McCain, tried to avoid saying anything about the clusterscrewup in Georgia that McCain’s campaign manager helped bring about. [Seriously, do some googling and find out what really happened in Georgia because the American media hasn’t done a good job of explaining how hard Georgia worked to provoke Putin.] As for Bush, I refer to his early rising star in the party when he was repeatedly praised for his speechifying and refreshingly downhome views. Google it up — Bush’s early reviews were almost word for word like Palin’s, minus the Family Circus aspects. I come from a place much more rural than Wasilla, and all I can say is that if you like Sarah Palin, you really don’t understand the nature of the evangelical beast. If elected, Palin would not just be for Republicans only, she’d be responsive only to her own brand of churched Republicans. With this woman you’re either with her, or on an enemy’s list. She is, in many ways, a younger Hillary Clinton, and even has her own WalMart baggage to go with the mooseburger resume.

Since Palin just recently got her first passport, I’m guessing she thinks the Georgia making headlines is due north of Florda. Oh, and thanks to Bush for writing a “spender’s” check to Georgia for a cool billion $ in taxpayer money. Hope your taxes pay for that TRS…misanthropic…

Featherweight? Community organizer vs mayor…Gov vs state Senator who voted present 150 times, probably so he wouldn’t leave a trail, US Senator for 170+ days who has spent a good portion of that campaigning for President. Toe to toe with Putin - you really think Obama would be better? Took him 3 days to figure out a position on the Russia invasion of Georgia. Who’s the lightweight here? You asked me for intellectual honesty - do you really think Obama is the best you could offer? Mark - I didn’t know you felt George Bush a gave a good speech, thought you’d be able to tell the difference. Here’s the issue - considering everything Obama should be walking away with this; but, its not happening. Someone like Palin comes along that connects with alot of people and you get worried, start making “unintellectual” statement, ie anti this, anti that, belittling them and at the same time puffing up yourselves - the list goes on. The reality is we are dealing with the classic liberal who wants to expand an already bloated and inefficent government further vs someone who trusts the American people, the free enterprise system and actually believe the people of this country are a bit smarter than the elites tend to give them credit for.

After the speech last night, I don’t think McCain’s going to drop her. She gave a great speech and I can understand why the GOP base is so fired up. She gets credit for being able to deliver a speech written by Bush’s speechwriter. Unfortunately, eventually she won’t have the luxury of going unchecked in a debate. She won’t have the protection of a convention to push the lies contained in half of her speech without being countered by both the opposition and the press (and then the right can whine some more). And TRS: Yes, I agree that the press did go after Palin and her daughter but did you really expect any less? Do you really believe that if one of Obama’s daughters got pregnant that nothing would be said? Are you being honest with yourself? The media went after her, but she offered herself and her family up on a silver platter when she accepted the VP nod.

This woman is ignorant, anti-intellectual, anti-books, anti-gay, pro-war, wants to secede from the union, lies about her dubious record on earmarks and the highway to nowhere, is facing probable indictment, gives a high school speech (gosh..she was a captain on her high school basketball team…wow) wrapping herself in “I’m for the troops”(implying the opposition isn’t) and “drill, drill, drill”!? She’s a featherweight and you say that she has “executive experience and gives a great speech? Well, she certainly represented her audience of delegates. Onward Christian soldiers marching on to war…The most frightening aspect is that phony trumped up hockey mom lipstick joke seems to represent the kind of leadership this sappy country wants. Any nation that gave Bush two terms and apparently longs for the good old days of post 9/11, deserves this charade. Proof? You bought what she was selling TRS, that says a lot. McCain and Rush can tell sick, humiliating jokes about Chelsea and you laugh. Your ticket can play the false old tax and spend card and you buy it. You still think trickle down economics works! This time I hope the D’s play the game your way, take off the gloves and give your “let them eat cake” followers a dose of their own medicine. Even by Karl Rove standards she’s NOT QUALIFIED. But she’s a nice little PTA type, that votes against sex-education and pregnancy prevention so she’s a-okay. You can see her going toe-to-toe with Putin? Guess it’s time to start building the old fallout shelters again. McCain & pistol packin Sarah are coming to town.

Nice job on talking points - why don’t you just cut and paste them from the liberal blog or the Obama campaign site? Irrelevent and boring. Palin didn’t humiliate her daughter - the legacy media, liberal bloggers and some Democrats choose to do that, something they have refrained from in the past. Common decency tells you they were wrong - period and end of story. Besides, I just watched the speech and all your points and the question is irrelevent. She was excellent and she’s here to stay. Biden didn’t have to humiliate his sons to continue to run for the senate. The issue is not whether you can have kids in need and be a politician. You can. No one is saying Palin should stay at home. The issue is whether you can pursue your interests without sacrificing your kids interests. Palin clearly didn’t do that, and at the same time is trying to claim that she’s pro family. If there’s one thing that is red meat for the press it’s a hypocrite. Palin could have remained gov. of Alaska and her daughter would have remained a local open secret, but she picked the national spotlight instead and is making her daughter pay what has to be a heavy price for her ambition. Plus, this is only one of dozens of problems with her. You can’t tell me that all that’s been written about her in the media is all some vast left wing conspiracy. The early press coverage of her was very positive, plucky Alaska hockey mom turned politician - only in America. Then the rest of the story came out. She’s got problems, serious problems, but the real issue is not Palin it’s McCain’s terrible judgment. Is this the way he intends to pick his cabinet, or a supreme court justice?

I’m not attacking the kid, I’m attacking the mother who did not protect her kid and the man who selected the mother not knowing/caring what it was going to do to the kid. Palin made this an issue when she paraded her family values all over the stage and then announced her daughter was pregnant to the world and then brought the daughter and the impregnator to the convention. I don’t care if she’s a man or woman, that is an issue because she made it an issue. The issue isn’t that her daughter is pregnant, the issue is that her mother put her interests ahead of her daughters and subjected her daughter to public humiliation. As for not attacking Chelsea, here is a Limbaugh joke: Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat. Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is a White House dog?” And he puts up a picture of Chelsea Clinton. Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old. “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father”. -John McCain, 1998 Two wrongs don’t make a right, but a selective memory makes a hypocrite.

Sarah Palin? The woman who introduced wedge politics to Wasilla, AK? The woman who tried to fire half the city government her first day on the job? The woman who inquired into the procedure for banning books at the local library? The governor who fought for the Bridge to Nowhere and didn’t abandon it until five months after Congress defunded it? The woman who fired a key state official for refusing to fire her ex-brother-in-law? The same Republican Gov. Palin who addressed (by video) the Alaska Independence Party’s convention this year? (The same AIP that wants to secede from the union, and whose 2004 and 1994 conventions Palin attended, and the party her husband was registered as a member of until a few years ago.) — — — That Sarah Palin? The same Sarah Palin who, in response to a very few online rumors humiliated her oldest daugher on national TV this Monday? The same Sarah Palin whose political career outweighed her teenaged daughter’s need for privacy? — — — Careful who you brag up. The real Sarah Palin is, apparently, less well known among Republicans than she is among Democrats. And if you’re Jewish, be very afraid because she’s been very open to the Jews for Jesus movement, so much so that she spent her only non-campaign briefing time since Monday’s press conference meeting with the full AIPAC board today. Again, this was the only non-sleep time she’s had in days that wasn’t spent being coached by McCain’s handlers. The speech she’s delivering tonight? It was written before they picked her, so they’re adding some lipstick to it but it’s still the same McCain campaign written speech that Tim Pawlenty would have been delivering tonight had McCain not gone with Palin.

Intrade prediction markets have started taking bets McCain will dump her. If it is up to him, I don’t think he would because he would see it as an admission of bad judgement. If his campaign plays a bigger part in it, I think he may get more pressure from them to dump her. I think his campaign has tightened the leash on him recently to avoid anymore gaffes this close to the election, and I also think they didn’t play too much of a role in picking Palin. On a side note, I don’t criticize McCain too much for picking her. Personally, I disagree with Palin on every political issue so far, but McCain was in a difficult position in picking the VP. He was playing defensive, under in the polls, he still hadn’t pulled in his base entirely and wasn’t as strong as he should be with independents. Does he play it safe and go for one of the more predictable choices that might help a little on both sides? Or does he take a risk and choose a dark horse that almost guarantees him the base while throwing a bone out to the Clinton supporters (a coin toss from the McCain camps perspective). In the end, he did shore up the conservative base because they were badly wanting to get excited about something. He learned how much he needed that base when Bush used it to tear him up in 2000 and he has spent the last several years trying to make up for that. But by embracing the cheerleader of the far right that opposes so many of the issues Clinton and many of her supporters value, McCain alienates much of the middle he needs to win. Are there women out there who support Palin’s conservative policies? Yes, but they were not going to vote for Obama anyway and I guarantee they will support Palin regardless of what emerges. If McCain had chosen Pawlenty or Romney, which I suspect he would have if Clinton had not run in the primary, who knows what would have happened? He would have a better argument to appeal to independents, but I am not so sure the social conservatives would be so excited either. I don’t think personal issues should take priority in an election, but after watching a year of half of baseless attacks on Obama, I am really not going to cry for Palin. She made the choice to bring her daughter into the spotlight knowing completely the examination she and her family’s life would be under from serious journalists to geeky bloggers panting for the next shock story. And I am completely disgusted by the right’s hypocrisy at blaming everything from the liberal media (a token every election) to sexism for Palin’s treatment (insert eyeroll). In all of McCain’s campaign’s assertions that families are off-limits, I am reminded of the joke McCain told regarding Chelsea, “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her parents are Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno.” Apparently the media has a higher standard to meet than their own candidate.

Yea Blowfly - lets look into Obama’s kids, see how they are doing in school, perhaps check to see if they’ve misbehaved recently. Yes sir - lets go after the families….OH, I forgot, its only OK if they are Republicans. The last bastion of decency within the legacy press was leaving the families alone, particularly the kids. They didn’t touch Chelsea nor the Bush twins. You wouldn’t be making the statements about throwing her daughter under the bus if it her name were Joe Palin. No one said Senator Biden should stay at home after the tragic accident with his 1st wife to take care of his children, it was assumed he could be a good father and Senator; however, because Palin’s 1st name is Sarah and expressed support for family values, you say she asked for it - what a load of dung! Senators Obama and Biden have said families should be off limits. Apparently its only the political “cut throats”, the radical left if you will, whose ethical perspective allows for “anything goes” if it advances their cause who think its fine to trash anyone who stands in their way. Thank heavens your candidate seems to have a bit more class than that.

Now McCain is calling on the media to back off? Right. It’s the same old tune, it’s the media fault (what happened to idea of holding people accountable for their actions?). That’s what you get when you select someone you only met for 15 minutes. If you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen. It’s not the media’s fault she has problems on top of problems. It’s not the media’s fault that the first words out of her mouth were about her family values (just before she sold her daughter down the river). It’s not the media’s fault that McCain can’t vet his way out of a wet paper bag. It’s not the media’s fault that she’s dragging her daughter’s impregnator to the convention. If McCain had done his job, then the media wouldn’t have to do it for him. He’s rash, impulsive, reckless, and irresponsible the least he can do is stand up and say I’m the one who screwed this up, the media is just doing its job.

Do I think he will? No…I do at least give him a little more credit than that. What has been completely entertaining is watching the media completely freak out over the selection. Whatever non-existent shred of actual journalism the mainstream press has offered over recent years has certainly been thrown out the window as they work to grab any angle possible to derail her. You would think that if they thought she was that much potential trouble for McCain they would be love to see her stick around. In reality I think she scares the hell out of them because she’s not an Insider, like Obama-Biden and McCain.(and has more experience than Obama too!!) If she even comes close to hitting a home run in tonight’s speech…it will be wonderfully entertaining to watch the reactions….and in thinking about it - when the media types act the way that they are…I wonder if they can really be that organized and consistent about their paper thin agenda or if they are just operating with minimal I.Q. points….it’s got to be one or the other….

Of course he will not dump her. His campaign was lagging behind and he knew he needed to stir the pot, so to speak. He was busy deriding Obama for his so-called “celebrity” status, knowing himself that there was nothing about him to create any real interest. He saw all of the excitement surrounding Obama (which is genuine optimism, not “celebrity”)and decided to create some political sensation, Jerry Springer style. I feel badly for her daughter who is caught in the middle of all of this. We should be happy to elect people into the highest office in the land when they have more ambition than common sense, eh?

No - why should he? Experience? Well, she may be a heatbeat from the Presidency but the Dems want to give us a neighborhood organizer as President who has -0- managerial experience. Family issues? Answer that question with a question - is your family perfect? McCain’s judgment? I like Joe Lieberman but the Republican platform is pro life and he’s just not a fit - neither was Ridge. Best I can tell the only hypocrites showing petulant anger and lack of judgment are the libs who are trying to jump onto anything to destroy this Gov Palin. They are hypocrites in that they show their true colors when it comes to a female seeking a high position (as they did with Hillary) and angry because Gov Palin energized the base and thats a bit scary. McCain’s a stubborn old fool, he just might ride this out despite the fact that so far the pick has been an unmitigated disaster. This pick was reckless, and could put the presidency in the hands of a grossly unqualified nut-job. It’s hard to underestimate how irresponsible this pick is. Palin’s membership in the Alaska Independence Party alone out to be a deal breaker. How can a candidate for the second highest FEDERAL office in the land support a party whose major tenet is the withdrawal of Alaska from the union. She’s supposed to be family first but is throwing her unwed teenage daughter under the bus for the sake of her ambition for a job for which she’s totally unqualified. Subjecting your own daughter to worldwide humiliation in order to pursue a job is NOT putting the interests of your family first. That’s called exploitation, and even I - a heathen democrat can recognize that for what it is. Not to mention that this pick destroys McCain’s best issue against O’bama , namely, his lack of experience (which is a real issue - which O’bama at least had the good sense to address by picking Biden). Plus, it hands O’bama on a silver platter his two best issues against McCain: 1) his reckless judgment - if this is an example of how he’s going to build his administration, to quote Biden “that’s not a train I want to be on;” 2) 4 more years of Bush/Cheney - Palin is right off the Bush/Cheney bench, Christian evangelical who does not believe in global warming evolution (you might as well say you don’t believe in physics or science at all), thinks the war in Iraq is a mission from God, ect.. Palin is basically George Bush in a skirt. McCain scares the hell out of me.

The answer is no, he will not dump her. McCain was denied his preferred candidates in Lieberman and Ridgeway, by the party’s ultra-conservative, deep pocketed religious hypocrites. Showing his petulant anger, lack of judgement and current state of childlike emotional immaturity, he selected a person uniquely unqualified candidate for this position. Due to his advanced age and health issues, along with the rigors of the job, the likelihood of Ms. Palin assuming his duties, if elected, would is elevated. McCain’s anger with those who disagree with him and intransigence on most issues combined with his arrogance would not allow him to admit this, or most any other error.

I think Governor Palin was an excellent pick for the VP. Skeletons? not really, so she has a teen age daughter that is pregnant, it makes her more liked because their are many, many other mothers in this nation that his been through this. And she is getting married so she is trying to do the right thing. I think this is also a family issue that should be left out of the media.
