Bengals Chinedum a big hit with kids

Cincinnati Bengals strong safety Chinedum Ndukwe is often recognized for his big hits and playmaking ability on the football field, but is now being recognized for his work off the field and his gift for giving.

On Tuesday, October 28, 2008, Columbus City Council President Michael C. Mentel will join Ndukwe to celebrate the NFL player’s gift of $5,000 to the Christian Youth Athletic Association (CYAA) Saints League’s football division. The money allowed the organization to buy helmets and uniforms for 185 under-privileged children throughout Columbus who participated in the league.

The NFL Youth Football Fund matched Ndukwe’s donation, which also allowed the CYAA to purchase a van to drive players to and from practice.

Ndukwe, a Columbus area native, was honored Tuesday night for his generosity and giving back to the community.

Ndukwe is one of the bright spots on this sorry team, as is the rest of the defense. There aren’t enough stories like this about these men doing good things in the community. We need more of him, and less of losers like Thurman, Henry, etc.

This is a definite bright spot not just for the bengals but for the NFL at large. It’s sad that stories like this don’t register much on the national sports news radar. That’s largely fault of the consumers of news desire for bad news first and the media outlets choice of coverage. I’m willing to bet there are more athletes doing good and doing nothing than those doing bad. But when is someone actually doing something positive “interesting?” I hope this guy doesn’t get discouraged but keeps shining the light where ever there is darkness and shallow hope.

It’s very rare that a professional athlete is also a good role model. So many of them get too caught up in their celebrity that they forget about others. There are a couple football players who have shown their concern for children by holding, sponsoring and attending youth camps and other activities. Most have lost sight of how they got their celebrity in the first place…the fans. The average person does not get paid to “play” a sport. These men get paid to play b/c lots of people pay to see them play and the majority of the players cannot show their appreciation. Because of this, Chinedum is getting praise for parting with FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, which is a very small fraction of what he brings in. I am curious how much money made in the NFL goes to charity…

Finally a report from the NFL that is not negative. I’m tired of hearing about the off field problems these players have. Big C thanks for reporting the other side of things to us. Keep it positive!
