Not trying to offend anyone, but, its kind of obvious its members of the band writing these comments… Your choice, but come on. This poll wont prove anything, just let your music do the talking. Oh, and side note: internet radio doesn’t really count as radio. Just from a fan’s point of view (I like you guys) it looks like you’re trying really hard to make a big deal out of nothing…

Very high energy assortment of talent! Lance is one of the hottest guitar players in the area, Brian can lay down the bass like a pro, Dan is one of the best drummers I’ve heard and with Timmy handling the vocals it’s just a matter of time before these guys make it big!

I know most of the people that have commented and they are not members of the band, they are true fans. I don’t think it’s fair for you to try to convince people their comments are not sincere. Maybe you are the one taking it too seriously. They are very talented musicians.

I have to agree with Doug S. I have never seen more talent in one band !! To see a drummer put so much energy and his own spin on each song !(Kings landing) The singer involves the crowd which is awesome ! As for the Dont want to offend anyone comment,it seems maybe that person has not heard of Sirius Radio and they may be just a little jealous or another band not getting any votes? Good Luck to all bands !

Again, I’m a fan, not jealous, heck I voted for kings. Just constructive criticism. And Sirius is a major market satellite radio sweetheart. Completely separate from internet radio.

The John Taylor Trio, also known as the Brio Trio, performs jazz as fine as any band you might see in larger cities such NYC or Chicago. They’re like a fine oiled machine. Once they get started, the quality of the material they put out will blow you away! They have gained respect of musicians of all genres, not just jazz, due to the finesse and flow of their improvisation and eloquent interpretation of every piece they perform.

DJ’s are NOT musician’s and should not be included in this poll!! DJ’s push buttons that trigger the performance of other people’s music. They stand behind their laptop’s looking hipster cool and that’s about it. Disc Jockey - one who jockey’s discs (plays records).

I think most everyone would agree, except for dj’s, that mixing beats on a laptop, doing remix’s of other people’s music, or even hitting the play button to start your own creation doesn’t qualify someone as a musician. An entertainer, sound artist, perhaps. This is just about as bad as considering pizza a vegetable. I agree with bub…

What happened to Golden Guy and the Blame Shifter’s? Yes! We know he’s a jerk, can’t sing, substance abuser, invokes his own personal pain for inspiration and all that — But the guy held down the 70’s on all 75 of those incredible top ten country hits right out of Brandt Ohio! So he’s washed up? Well this snub doesn’t help! Shame on you DDN! Rough’n up old country acts for the sake of fresh new talent.

This poll is really a bogus popularity contest, and is not a true representation of who the “best non-rock band” in Dayton will be. There are many other talented bands “non-rock bands” in Dayton that are not even included in this poll. It’s a few days of scrambling, and pushing all of the friends and family you can think of who has an email address to sway them in to voting for your group. In my opinion, anyone who thinks this poll is good for a marketing tool, is nuts.
By Right On
November 26, 2011 1:43 AM | Link to this
Cecilia nailed it! And to think that there is “rock” and then just a lumping of “everything non-rock” — come on, there’s a DJ on this list. Country, Jazz, Folk, Soloist, Large Group, etc… it’s not the Grammy’s, but Dayton could look to Cincinnati as an example. They are all bogus popularity polls, but they (Cincinnati’s CEA Awards) do convey some essence of recognition and honor. Active Dayton doesn’t take this seriously…obviously.
By Rather than taking it seriously...
November 26, 2011 3:52 AM | Link to this
I wouldn’t say anyone making comments has nailed it exactly yet. This contest is just a way for ActiveDayton to generate traffic to their website. More intense the competition, the better. It’s a popularity contest by design. Even if it weren’t a popularity contest, how would one judge the aesthetic superiority of one band over another? If you think there exists a universal quantitative metric to music to ever make it fair, then you’re not listening to music closely enough.

A strange irony - DDN stopped posting the “Music Tonight” section of the paper online. There is a link, but there hasn’t been content there in months. Active Dayton’s attempt to list Live Music in any consistent way has been pathetic. There is so much great music happening in the area; it’s a shame there isn’t more effort in the area of promotion on this website, rather than a goofy poll. And the bigger shame—the lack of live audiences. Folks are less and less interested or willing to listen/watch a live performance. Musicians rely on the relationships with their audience. Not in an American Idol, “hey look at us, we’re stars.” kind of way, but in a REAL, “thank you for coming out and supporting us” way. If you vote in this poll, consider making a REAL impact and attend some live shows, make friends with the musicians. Share an experience!!

Out of what is listed, which is missing alot of Daytons talent I would have to go with the Brookshire quintet based on the talent of their feild. Don’t think Kings Landing is the best in Dayton for country, saw their show and it was more smoke and mirrors than new talent. I have heard alot of bands out there that were way better but not getting involved in the weak polls that Active Dayton put together, just not a game changer. I would think by now if Kings were really the best country group on the scene they would be packed up and playing Broadway in Nashville with all the real heavy hitters….then lets see. Anyways based on talent displayed I would say the quintet.

Hi Mark, I’d like to see you provide some sort of comparison of the “talent” of the various groups. What makes the Brookshire group more “talented”, exactly?
By Mark
November 26, 2011 5:39 PM | Link to this
My comparision is what I said….”in their feild” which is musically for the genre they perform. The guys that make up the quintet are very seasoned pros in the ability to perform the music they do. I was dissappointed to see a Kings show and notice the singer playing the acoustic…as a stage prop…he was not even playing the chords to the song, I felt that was decietful to the audience and not a true representation of their genre. I am not saying that they lack talent or any others lack talent, I am saying for the genre’s that each group represent they must be at the top of their game to be called “The Best in Dayton”, There are several other non rock bands like…The Highway Junkies (awesome country band) The Eflatt band, and others who are also great players, just not on the list. So going by who is listed I would say the quintet is to me…best at their genre. Everyone has an opinion, not everyone will agree but thats the bad thing about throwing yourself out there on a poll.

So, who is this Wheels group? Have they ever played a show in Dayton? They must have a lot of F-book friends…lol. Have never heard of them… Ye who has the biggest email list and most social network friends wins. This has nothing to do with talent or real recognition.

No comparisons @Mark as that is not a fair task to achieve when there are so many talented individuals listed in the voting. But let me change your question a bit to make it more fair into “What is the talent represented by the Brookshire group?” I know these individuals so can give you a thumb nail sketch. Eddie (the name sake) is a seasoned pro, a Professor at UD, Sinclair Community College in in their jazz programs. He is the jazz musicians jazz musician. Both Eddie and Keigo Hirakawa are faculty at UD, both have graduate degrees in music, Eddie from Northern Illinois University and Keigo from the Boston Conservatory. Sax player, Jack Novotny received musical training at North Texas State and the trumpeter Gary Onady, musical training at Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music. The drummer is a graduate from Central State in their jazz program. Locally, they were featured at the City Folk Festival one of the few local acts playing among national and international acts. They are featured at many local festivals and hold court several times a year at Gillys. While being a locally based band, they are well respected regionally, playing regularly in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Detroit. Their touring schedule in the next week has them performing at Detroit’s Music Hall, Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp, and Pittsburgh’s Little E’s. If you add up the years of performance experience (not age) for the quintet, it surpasses 120 years. They have a song book of over 60 original tunes, plus read cold from over a 1000 of standard jazz charts. Experience, highly trained musicians in demand in many mid-west cities in the region must say something about the talent of the Brookshire organization. If you have not had the chance to hear them at many of the festivals and benefits for organizations around the area (Crayons to Classrooms or at the dedication of Riverscape in celebration of our great cities achievements) then you are truly missing out on the chance to experience this quality of talent. Please do come out and give them and of all the fine jazz groups and individuals listed in the voting and support your local jazz scene such that the quintet can stay closer to home.

I just had to jump back on here after reading everyone’s comments and say one more thing. To Right On’s point (and Mark too, I believe)… you really can’t say that there is “rock” …and then just lump everything/one else under “non-rock”. That is rediculous, and in all truth, unfair to ALL of the bands/DJ’s in Dayton, be it Country, Jazz, Folk, Soloist, Large Group, or DJ/mix artist. I don’t know whose bright idea it was at Active Dayton to set it up this way, but, if they are going to do these polls, I think they should do them right, and make it fair to all (even though I personally hate this type of poll, and do realize this isn’t the Grammys :)..) by creating genre categories. It really doesn’t make any sense at all to pit all of these talented folks against each other, when much of what one does is so VASTLY different from another! As Mark says, it’s really about the “talent of their field”. I say we all should reach out to Active Dayton and tell them to make this poll more of an “equal opportunity” by creating genres. How difficult could that be for them? I would think it would draw more traffic to their site anyway! Just my own two cents. I for one am going to let them know how I feel.

While everyone’s points are well taken, there are reasons other than popularity contest that musicians campaign for the top spot on this poll. As Jim rightly suggests, Dayton lacks appreciation for live music. Those who vote are have higher chances of showing up to your next gig (slightly)—-anyone who’s been in this business long enough would know that this is true. Club owners also gauge it as your ability to advertise. So these bands are doing what they outta be doing by mobilizing as many people as possible. Now go see some live music!

Once again, this is all about social networking. That doesn’t always equate to attendance at gigs, however. Most are willing to sit on their behinds and click to vote, but rarely leave the house. Take this WB joker - can hardly play his trumpet, but has 5,000 facebook friends…and just moved to Dayton… Votes for that joker only reflect his FB presence, not his musicianship, or anyone’s awareness of the music. Total egomaniac. Everyone should vote for Jim McCutcheon - classy guy, super talented, gives back to his community, and has no ego.

Self-love indeed. This poll is a reflection of our society’s complete lack of understanding between art and garbage. What is a real shame is that the majority of the folks writing about musicians (and commenting on this poll) have no idea what is good and what is bad in music. It’s as if a food critic gave a four-star rating to a bag of Skittles (because it was sweet and fruity). Would this critic keep their job? Furthermore, the American Idol aesthetic has seeped so deeply into our collective unconscious that a no-talent hack with hip clothes, cavorting wildly to his or her own notes (even if they are “avoid” notes-dig?), brings forth accolades from under-educated listeners who, like weak-minded storm troopers, fall under the Jedi mind-trick of the performer.

I have seen and listened to “The Eddie Brookshire Quintet” at various locations in the region. I’m not sure why they still reside in Dayton, OH. Their sound is reminiscent of the strong trumpet/tenor saxophone led groups that emanated out of New York in the 60’s. They sound like early Wynton/Branford Marsalis. People have told me they rehearse alot and it sounds as if they do. Very polished, tight, and responsive. There is nothing even close to their musical level in Dayton.
