WDPR to count down classical 100

Beethoven, Mozart and other usual suspects will almost certainly be represented when WDPR-FM in Dayton announces its fifth annual Top 100 of classical music for the year, as chosen by listeners.

But some unexpected, even surprising choices will also dot the list, if this year is like the past few.

“The Dayton audience is a sophisticated one,” said Shaun Yu, program director for Classical 88.1, who started the Top 100 after he came to WDPR and WDPG from Portland, Ore., in 2007. “Dayton audiences are incredibly knowledgeable about the full range of classical music. This list is a lot more diverse than you would find in many bigger cities. ”

Yu has counted the votes, but said the results won’t begin to be made public until the countdown from 100 to 1 begins at 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 26 on Dayton’s “The Voice of the Arts.” The top selection will be played sometime on Dec. 30.

Voters are permitted to list their 10 top choices. “When we started this, they could only list five, but we raised that based on popular demand,” Yu said. “The response has always been terrific. The results are great fun and food for discussion.”
