New York, Texas quartets in May 1 finals
String quartets from New York City and Austin, Texas, will perform in the finals of Chamber Music Yellow Springs’ 26th annual International Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles.
The event will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the First Presbyterian Church of Yellow Springs, 314 Xenia Ave.
The Voxare String Quartet of New York will play Aleksandra Vrebalov’s “Pannonia Boundless,” Haydn’s Quartet Op. 20, No. 2, and the Shostakovich Quartet No. 3.
The Aeolus String Quartet from Austin has programmed Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in A minor, Op. 13, and the Bartok String Quartet No. 4.
Judges will be Jessica Hung, concertmaster of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra; Aaron Berofsky, violinist of the Chester String Quartet ,and Amir Eldan, cellist of the Oberlin Trio.
Cash awards are $3,800 for first place, $2,800 for second. The competition will be recorded for later broadcast by WDPR-FM.

Gallery to showcase new stage tunes
Encore Theater Company will present a program of new songs from musical theater writing teams at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, in the Color of Energy gallery, 16 Brown St., Dayton.
Songs by Derek Gregor and Sam Carner, Jonathan Larson Award winners Jeff Thomson and Jordan Mann, Kyle Jarrow, Benji Pasek with Justin Paul will be included in “I Feel So Much Spring,” the latest in ETC’s concert series.
Amy Leigh and Steven Leigh will direct.
