Culture Works finds director in Seattle

Martine Meredith Collier, currently the director of development and membership for Grantmakers in the Arts in Seattle, has been named as the new president and chief executive of Culture Works.

The Dayton area’s united arts fund announced the hiring on Tuesday, March 29, and said she would begin work on May 9.

Kathy Hollingsworth has served as interim director of Culture Works since Denise Rehg stepped down in 2010. A search for a permanent leader was launched in August.

The Culture Works search committee was impressed by Collier’s “balance of fundraising, marketing and management experience, collaborative nature and sincere enthusiasm.”

She previously served as executive director of the Sarasota (Fla.) County Arts Council.

Collier received a bachelor of fine arts in theater from the University of Memphis and a master of arts in arts administration from Goucher College in Baltimore..

“As this flight departs Seattle for Dayton, passengers looking out the windows will notice that the view gets more and more depressing as we draw closer and closer to Dayton. Rusting mobile homes dot the landscape, along with boarded-up buildings and - HOLY CRAP! we’re drawing gunfire from East Dayton! Gotta go.”

Dear Martine: Are you insane? Moving to Dayton is a TERRIBLE idea. I live in Dayton, and the city is an armpit. Crime is awful, the downtown is more than 50% vacant (for good reason) and the major arts organizations are slowly imploding.==================== People are leaving Dayton at a record pace. Property values are at rock bottom, with many homes and other buildings simply abandoned. Vicious Pit Bulls roam the streets, drugs and prostitution are rampant, and the local government is a bizarre combination of incompetent and crooked. Random gunfire is common in may neighborhoods. Dayton Public Schools are among the worst in the state.====================== Stay in Seattle!!!!

Talk about a lousy job: trying to get the slack-jawed, toothless residents of this Appalachian Babylon we call Dayton to cough up donations for the arts.

While some of the previous posts are a bit extreme, there probably aren’t very many people qualified in Arts Administration willing to move to Dayton. The city is sliding downhill pretty fast, and it’s very obvious.

You’re moving here to Dayton from Seattle…a beautiful dynamic city by the sea, full of creative people and art?! Hint: My brother and I invented the airplane to get out of here! Does that help you in figuring out that you’ve made a drastic mistake? Prepare yourself for “culture” shock. Wecome to little Detroit. I have a spare kevlar vest…can loan you my spare Colt 1911 .45…but I’m not sure how you’ll look decked out this way in a gown at one of the upcoming arts events. Accepting this position will be a detriment to your overall career status. I feel bad for you.

DDN - why, why, why do you allow reader comments on your articles? It does nothing but provide amusement for bitter, angry trolls. Hey guys, if you hate Dayton so much, GTFO.
