Bombeck Workshop gets major donation
The endowment fund supporting the University of Dayton’s Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop has received a major new gift.
Doug and Tracy (Hamberg) Jones of Cincinnati and Greg and Cara (Hamberg) Holdener of Belleville, Ill., have added their joint contribution to the $100,000 endowment fund their parents established in 2004. The amount was not specified.
Their mother, the late Cindy Price Hamberg, was a cousin of Bro. Tom Price S.M., the UD English professor who inspired famed humorist, columnist and author Bombeck with what she called “three magic words.” He told her, “You can write.” Their father (the husband of Cindy Price), Ralph Hamberg, was also a UD alumnus.
Both extended families have other ties to UD. Megan Jones, 19, who has just finished writing her first book, received advice from Bombeck Workshop faculty member Sophronia Scott. Anna Holdener, meanwhile, has received her acceptance letter to attend UD and plans to enroll in pre-med studies there this fall.
The workshop is the only one of its kind in the country devoted to humor and human interest writing.
The 2011 edition will be April 19-21 at UD. For more information, visit facebook.com/ermabombeck or www.humorwriters.org.

I attended this workshop several years ago with my brother and his wife. We all enjoyed this workshop very much.
