Philharmonic releases new CD
The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra has released a new compact disc recording of two 20th century works: William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1 (“Afro-American”) and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6.
Both performances were recorded live at the Schuster Center during the 2008-09 season, and both were conducted by music director Neal Gittleman.
Each of the Still symphony’s four movements is preceded on the recording by a Paul Laurence Dunbar poem, recited by University of Dayton professor emeritus and poet in residence Herbert Woodward Martin.
The CD was made with a “New Media Initiative” grant to the DPO by the Miriam Rosenthal Memorial Trust Fund. It’s the first of three recordings that will be issued under auspices of the grant. Future CDs will include performances from the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
The new CD is available for $20 through the Dayton Philharmonic offices on the second floor of Performance Place, 109 N. Main St. in Dayton, or during intermission of any Classical or Classical Connections concert, beginning with the season openers Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 23-25, at the Schuster Center, Second and Main streets.
The full CD as well as individual tracks will be available for download soon at www.daytonphilharmonic.com.
