Coal film opens Sinclair festival

“Coal Country,” a new documentary about attempts by Appalachian residents to stop the coal industry practice of “mountaintop mining,” will open a first-time film festival at Sinclair Community College on Monday, April 26.

The inaugural “Sinclair Screenings” festival will include three films.

The others are “Defiance,” about the escape of three Jewish brothers from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, and “The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant,” the Oscar-nominated documentary made in Dayton by Steve Bognar and Julia Reichert.

All three are free, open to the public and will be followed by discussions. A reception with bluegrass music will precede “Coal Country.”

Here is the schedule:

Monday, April 26: “Coal Country,” by Mari-Lynn Evans and Phyllis Geller. 3 p.m., following a reception at 2:30 in Room 130 of Building 14 at Sinclair, 444 W. Third. St.

Wednesday, April 28: “Defiance.” 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, as part of Sinclair’s Holocaust Remembrance Week. Room 130, Building 14.

Tuesday, May 11: “The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant.” Noon in the Fred Smith Auditorium of the Sinclair Conference Center, near the intersection of West Fourth and Perry streets.
