4 from area win state arts honors
Four Dayton area residents were among eight individuals and organizations honored with 2010 Governor’s Awards for the Arts on Wednesday, April 21.
Human Race Theatre Company executive director Kevin Moore and artistic director Marsha Hanna won in the category of arts administration. Greenville residents James and Enid Goubeaux were recognized as arts patrons.
Sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council and the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation, the awards were presented at the Athenaeum in downtown Columbus as part of the annual Arts Day activities.
Others chosen from more than 100 nominees across the state were: Sylvia Easley, director of the Music Settlement in Cleveland, for arts education; the American Electric Power Co., statewide, for business support; Donna Sue Groves of Manchester, community development and participation; and poet Andrew Hudgins of Columbus, individual artist.
Moore told an audience including many from the Miami Valley that the Dayton community “made it possible 24 years ago for us to be theater artists and it’s still supporting us today.”
James Goubeaux, who said there’s no reason anyone should be intimidated about participating, added that the arts “are something that binds together all of us who reside on this planet.”
Other speakers included Frances Strickland, wife of Gov. Ted Strickland.
Common themes included how much community investment in the arts returns in the form of jobs, tax revenues and economic impact.

It’s nice that this article got posted online. I’m sorry that the major article in the Arts section wasn’t worthy of online inclusion. The article covering the Governor’s Awards last year was posted. I would have thought the entire paper was online — but I guess not.
