‘Wicked’ numbers hard to forget
The musical “Wicked,” which invaded and conquered downtown Dayton Feb. 17-March 7, is gone, having moved on to other cities where the grass and money are green. It won’t be forgotten by the time it comes this way again, as it almost certainly will in two or three years.
Even so, the Broadway show’s inaugural run at the Schuster Performing Arts Center didn’t seize the record from “The Phantom of the Opera,” but that’s only because “Phantom” played the same theater for four weeks in 2003. If “Wicked” had stayed another week, things might be different.
Here’s a glance at just how well it did do, according to the Victoria Theatre Association, which presented it.
“Wicked” by the numbers:
Wicked by the numbers:
53,000: tickets sold. Capacity is 54,000.
$85: average ticket price paid to see it at the Schuster Performing Arts Center.
$4,590,000: box office receipts.
2: number of couples who got publicly engaged during the run. (One groom to be, Matt Fullenkamp, said he was seated near “a good friend of the actress who played Glinda. She sent a text to Glinda during intermission, after I had proposed. During the curtain call, Glinda and the other actors looked down and said, ‘congratulations!’ “)
12,847: number of cars parked at the Arts Garage, Ludlow and Second streets.
721: total of Victoria Theatre Association volunteers who worked during the two dozen performances.
6,422: volunteer hours they put in as ushers, bar attendants, team leaders, etc.
16,888: VTA staff hours, not including administrative personnel.
24: Dayton Police Department officers who directed traffic before and after performances (does not include extra patrols assigned by the DPD).
2,750: Ticket buyers served in the adjoining Citilites restaurant before shows.
Next attraction at the Schuster will be the recently revived Broadway musical “A Chorus Line,” April 27-May 2. For tickets and more information, call (937) 228-3630 or go to www.ticketcenterstage.com.
