Michael Buble sings pretty, talks trashy

DAYTON — The members of the storied Rat Pack were known to get a little randy during their notoriously booze-fueled Las Vegas appearances.

But Canadian-born crooner Michael Buble, whose retro-pop stylings take particular inspiration from Sinatra, Martin and company, may have gone a tad too far Tuesday night, Oct. 7, during a concert at Wright State University’s Ervin J. Nutter Center.

The guy’s locker room humor and language clashed with the finely polished musical selections, creating a jarring juxtaposition of crass and class. One woman looked increasingly mortified — on large-screen video, no less — as Buble made insinuating sexual suggestions to the man assumed to be her husband. Such was Buble’s stage banter.

Sometimes the clash between the sordid and the suave can be funny; sometimes it’s uncomfortable — the way a drunk can be variously charming and vulgar.

And Buble does indeed have his charms — endearingly goofy ears and all.

His evocative vocals range from a velvety tenor to a tender bass, the depths of which are enhanced by a powerhouse eight-man horn section and a four-man rhythm and strings unit.

When everything hits, including the Vegas-style stage lighting, the effect is electric.

Oh, FYI to the Buble newbies in the audience: Trombonist Nick Vayenas, supposedly “Dayton’s own,” is a noted jazz musician and composer born and reared in Boston. The bit where he steps in for Buble, after the singer storms off the stage in a pretend snit, only to return and “play” Vayenas’ trombone, is a standard part of the show.

I was there, and Carol is right on. This guy was creepy, over the line, more than inappropriate, and it’s disheartening to find out that the whole trombone thing was a rehearsed act. Makes me sick, and this is my last Buble show. WAs he drunk? Don’t know, don’t care. Over it.

I thought he was GREAT. It was my first time seeing him and I thought his personality made the show better. He mingled with the audience a lot. He seemed genuine in his “thanks for coming” comments. If you didn’t realized that whole thing was staged(the trombone part), you have been duped by the media…I knew it all along….They were having fun. His voice is AWESOME… Sounds like someone needs to take a chill pill….or maybe have a drink yourself….

Seriously, the guy was awesome. Who cares what he did in between songs? Monica is right you have to be half way slow to think the skit was real. I will go back to see him again. probaly one of the best concerts that I have been to in a while. Righton seems to have the hinny hairs wound a little to tight.

Bottom line, the concert was great and entertaining. The artist will always play to audience and the town they live in, but who cares how he did it. Michael Buble seemed sincere to me in his appreciation to the audience and the Dayton area. If Mr. Buble should read this, then please make sure you come back to the Dayton area.

I was at the concert last night…which was my third Buble concert this year, and he was just as amazing as he was the first time. The comments he makes throughout the show are entertaining and if you don’t like them you don’t have to go again…your choice. However, being a fan myself, getting to know the real Michael Buble is much better than having a performer onstage being fake. Buble is a wonderful singer and the show was and always will be worth going to.

By enjoyed it!

This was my daughters’ and my third time to see the concert this year. This time we brought my mother along. Three generations enjoying the same music. Not that speaks volumes about this guy’s talent. The show as you mentioned is a “vegas style” show. If you were offended by the comments made by Michael, then you probably shouldn’t go to vegas. While you’re at it you probably shouldn’t watch the news, read the paper, and definely shouldn’t listen to the presidential campaign ads and debates. Now there is something to be offended by. You can at least say you gave it a try and it is your opinion and right not to ever go again. Your empty seat will be filled. As for the trombone bit. It’s still funny! Every entertainer on tour does basically the same show night after night. I hope you find another “crooner” to go see.

I’m really, really shocked that anyone would think the trombone bit was for real. After all, it ends with it being revealed that Michael isn’t actually playing the trombone. Guess that went over a few people’s heads. This joke has been performed the world over and people everywhere have understood it. People the world over have also understood and enjoyed Michael’s sense of humor. This show isn’t billed as a kiddie show. Michael is known for his sense of humor; it’s spicy but doesn’t go over the line. Michael Bublé is a multi-platinum artist and GRAMMY winner who sells out venues the world over. Surely all those people can’t be wrong. I think some folks, this “critic” included, need to get out of the house more.

I have also seen Buble before and ran to buy my tickets the moment I heard he was coming. And he does mess around typically, but I too thought he went a bit over the top last night. See I’m a bad Mo Fo too and I hear trash talk everyday. What I don’t get to hear everyday is that beautiful voice. I say cut the crap and sing for me! That’s what I came to hear. He could have fit a few more beauties in the time he wasted playing around. I still love him tho!

“That’s Entertainment.” Go to some hard rock or even country concerts. You will hear not so nice words there too! Been to see him twice and will go again, again and again. Maybe some of you should go to the debates and hear good, clean, truthful words.HA!What a joke!

Last night was our 11th time seeing Michael in concert and we NEVER get tired of his incredible voice. Yes, the stage antics are just “Michael being Michael”, but if you take that seriously you’re missing the whole point. Michael loves this music and he loves being with an appreciative audience. Twice at Fraze and now at the Nutter Center proves that Michael will be back to Dayton again. And we’ll be there again!

Are you kidding me Carol Simmons? That sounds like comments from an old fuddy duddy! His in between antics is part of what makes the show so much fun! Seriously, if you don’t like it - don’t come again and seriously don’t write another article slamming Michael. Although, it really doesn’t matter, your article will certainly not be hurting his career or even the chance that he comes back for another Dayton concert. I will certainly be there and LOVING IT! It was one of the best shows I have seen! LOVE HIM even more now!

Saw him do the same show in Sydney, and took a 15yearold grand-daughter, there was nothing to be offended about andif you didn’t get the trombone thing you are a little thick. We don’t see him enough here in Australia, but I’ve been both times and will go whenever he comes back, he is a true entertainer, great voice and likes to send himself up as well. I love him.
