Time Warner Cable, LIN TV continuing contract talks

> Has the situation changed your television viewing habits?

By Thomas Gnau

Staff Writer

Wednesday, October 08, 2008

DAYTON — Talks between Time Warner Cable and LIN Television Corp., the company that owns WDTN-TV, continued Tuesday, Oct. 7, a representative of one of the participants said.

"There really is not any change," said Pamela McDonald, a Cincinnati-based spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable.

Courtney Guertin, a spokeswoman for LIN TV Corp., which owns WDTN, could not be reached.

WDTN's signal was pulled from Time Warner Cable's local offerings last week after the two sides failed to reach agreement on a contract.

"There is not a single issue that I have been made aware of that has been a single sticking point," McDonald said.

Thron: WDTN does not care about what is fair, they only care about lining thier pockets with as little effort as possible. LIN TV does not know how to run a bussiness and they want us the viewers to pay for thier mismanagement.

Oh, so funny. The point of this is, basic cable prices (around $10 a month) is regulated by the FCC. If TWC agreed to pay the 30+ cents per subscriber per month, that’d be $90k they could not recoup. How is that fair?

From the WSJ:

In one of the biggest and most hostile battles in recent years, on Friday local broadcaster LIN TV Corp.’s stations were pulled from Time Warner Cable Inc. The move followed heated but thus-far unsuccessful negotiations about retransmission fees — a charge per subscriber LIN TV is demanding for its local stations — and affects 2.7 million Time Warner Cable homes. That represents about 30% of LIN TV’s footprint.

Shares of Time Warner Cable had dropped about 15% in the …

I am getting pretty sick of this - only network shows I really watch are the Thur NBC primtime - Earl, Office, 30 Rock….yes, I also think NBC should know about why 300,000 people are not watching their station! If corporate NBC gets involved, I think things will be settled REAL quick…

I see Jason’s comments as to why WLIO (Lima NBC) is not allowed to come through due to WDTN has priority. However, WDTN no longer has a valid contract with Time Warner!!!!!! and TW should be able to continue the signal all night as they do until 7:30 each night.

A bigger issue is that TW counts channel 19 as a station that we are getting for our monthly fee when, in fact, it is just a duplication of channel 12. I wouldn’t care what was on channel 19 as long as it wasnt a duplicate of another

First, if one more person says they’re “suffering” because they can’t watch Oprah, or some other TV show, I’m going to puke. Second, WDTN is still available, and for free! It may take a good 5 minutes of effort; requiring you to get off the couch (sorry, can’t use the remote for this one) and install an antenna. You really can’t appreciate how whiny and childish people can be until you take away their TV. It’s like a bunch of 5 year-olds who can’t watch Saturday cartoons throwing a tantrum.

Laura, I just spoke with a friend who is signed via email for contest at WDTN. They just sent an email out this week that starts out by saying that TW is refusing to negotate with WDTN, then goes into some new contest. This shows how low WDTN will go to redirect calls from them to TW and also they are looking to redirect 100% fault/blame onto TW.

This is the latest update from Time Warner cable that I just received by phone. Time Warner is still in negotiations with Lin TV and Lin TV is still refusing to allow Time Warner to broadcast their signal. Time Warner is still working on bringing NBC programming to their Dayton viewers as soon as possible. Lin TV is asking Time Warner for money and lots of it.

Jeff, I was upset at the beginning but I am still a little bit upset.

Jason (and everyone) don’t stop with LIN Corporate, call WDTN, their offices are open until 5:30 pm.

The number is: 937-293-2101

We are calling them everyday, so should everyone else. We have been telling them we are tired of thier foolishness and we are not fighting thier battles for them. They need to put on thier “big boy pants” and fight for them selves.

WDTN has exclusive rights to air NBC programming in the Dayton market and that is why WLIO (NBC Lima) is “blacked out” during NBC programming.

I tried calling Lin TV corporate as well and just got that pre-written statement that basically says that WDTN wants to be treated like a cable network and I asked the rep, why when they are not a cable network. Rep wouldnt answer. TWC has done a great job at keeping their customers involved.

Go to www.TWDayton.com and they have all the facts!!!

When this is all over, I hope we all will receive WDTN HD through Time Warner. If not, there are going to be some angry TW customers.

Ann, Good idea because us, Time Warner customers need to ban together to get Lin TV to restore WDTN. I have told several people on here and Time Warner’s customer service people that I am on their side. I will start calling WDTN and Lin TV offices starting tomorrow because it is unfair to us viewers that we are stuck in the middle of their negotiations. I will send Lin TV and WDTN an e-mail before the day is out.

Laura and everyone else, don’t just call the Rhode Island WDTN office, call dayton. Cooporate will listen to them more then the viewers. the idea thing to do is flood Dayton office and Rhode Island with calls all day long. If we tie up thier phones and make thier life a living hell they should work harder to get things done. They think everyone is on thier side and we are not. We have been calling and emialing both offices since this has happen just to tell them how childish they are being.

In Troy we are supposed to have an NBC(WLIO)channel on channel 19. However, most all the time it is ETWN (Religion) which is an exact duplicate of what is on channel 12.

Why can’t TW just allow the WLIO signal to come across on channel 19 24/7 as it should be???

Steve, I agree with you a 100 percent because Lin TV and Time Warner are acting like three year olds. We are the ones that are suffering. Maybe we should flood NBC with phone calls and e-mails voicing our opinions. I was mad at the beginning but now I am going with the flow.

For those of you to stupid to figure out what is going on LIN TV which is 45% owned by AT&T is trying to force Time-Warner another huge corporation to bow to AT&T. AT&T wants you to switch to DISHNETWORK or AT&T’s U-VERSE these are our public airwaves and two GIANT corporations are using us SHAME SAME on AT&T and Time Warner I am glad I canceled my dishnetwork and switched cell phone service from at&t now if I could just get rid of ROADRUNNER

I love how TWC has replaced WDTN with HBO Family. They aired the uncut version of the movie Airplane the other night - showed all the frontal nudity too! I love that my kids are able to view such shows on a channel I never asked for. Thank you TWC for letting us watch a “premier” channel for “free”. I would rather not have ANY station than HBO (non-)family! I want my NBC programming back! I think TWC can part with a .01/day of what I pay them.

I love to get up early & have my coffee while reading the DDN & listening to the weather, traffic, & over night news on WDTN. I missed WDTN during the power outage & I miss it now. We just entered into a two year bundling contract with TWC before the power outage so a dish service is not in our budget. I think all local TV stations should be broadcast FREE as a public service to all citizens.

I don’t get all the U-Verse praises. I looked into it, and I’d love to know how anyone saves money with it. We don’t have digital phone or anything of the like right now and to get the same level of service on UVerse is MORE, not LESS than TW. While I’m not thrilled with TW, at least I don’t have to worry about sat reception or that kind of thing.

And bundling doesn’t always save you anything — that’s just marketing, people.

This whole situation stinks. Both sides are acting like 3 year olds blaming the other for the situation. Truth is it is both parties and we are the one suffering. It is only a matter of time befor some at NBC says hey wait a minute? Why are there o ratings from Dayton for any of our shows. I think people should start calling NBC and get them invovled. Then see how long it will drag on.

Judy, According to Time Warner it’s not that easy to get Channel 2 back, the issue is that Lin TV wants Time Warner to pay Lin TV for their signal on channels across the country. I have been in constant contact with customer service people in Ohio and with a person who works in the corporate office of Time Warner and negotiations between Time Warner and Lin TV are ongoing. I have lived in Dayton for the last thirty years and this is the first time that a local channel has been pulled off.

By Laura

October 8, 2008 1:37 PM | Link to this

Ann, I heard the same thing at the beginning from the Lin TV’s representative regarding negotiations with Time Warner. I called Lin TV yesterday to voice my opinion and the customer service representative didn’t even care about what I had to say. It seems to me that Time Warner is the only company that is looking out for their customers. I would love to know what is Lin TV broadcasting hiding from us viewers of cable tv.

So time warner says LIN never offered an extension, LIN says they offered it, but no one took them up on it..

The standard tier cable is ~$35-50/month minimum. LIN is proposing .01/day/customer, and the estimated customer base is 300,000 in dayton. thats $90,000 / month. Time Warner would collect $10.5-15 Million in that same month. Less than 9/10 of 1%.

ATT is missing out on alot of revenue in Belmont. We cannot get DSL or UVerse where we are so we had our att phone service taken out as well. It’s Road Runner or dial up. Dish or Direct TV could be an option but having had DTV I hated it on rainy days (can’t fault the installer as it was my husband who used to do it for a distributor) I miss AM news and Leno. I don’t see how anyone will solve this as neither side will give or compromise. Isn’t there an FCC Mediator? Henry Kissenger??

Why can’t the LIN TV Rep be reached for comment? I guess they are out of lies and need to regroup to come up with some new ones. I have a friend who got a contest email from WDTN that started out by saying the TW was NOT negoating with WDTN. Now LIN TV can’t be reached for comment. They can be reached for comment, they just don’t want to comment. ARe they afraid of being called out on one of thier lies?

According to Time Warner’s website it wasn’t Time Warner who dropped WDTN, I had a Time Warner technician out at my home yesterday and he told me that people who are complaining don’t have all of the facts to blame Time Warner for dropping WDTN. Lin TV has pulled their signals in Buffalo and several other cities across the country so people get all of your facts before you blame either side. I have switched to WHIO TV for my news and Soap Opera Network to watch my soap opera.

Q: “Is there a reason that Time Warner can’t get the Cincy NBC station?”

A: The Federal Communications Comission (FCC) rules state that WDTN is the only station in what they call the “local Dayton market” that is allowed to broadcast NBC programming. The only exception to this is in most of Clark and Champaign counties where they are close enough to Columbus where TWC also carries NBC Columbus on those systems. TWC is not allowed to place WLWT (NBC Cincinnati) on the Dayton TW cable system.

My Price Lock Guarantee clearly states that TWC has the right to add or remove channels at any time… I don’t mind TWC not having WDTN. I only watched NBC for Sunday Night Football and I can pick that up in HDTV format with a basic antenna so I am glad TWC is standing up for themselves and their subscribers.

WDTN can rot away for all I care. NewsCenter 7 has all of their news in a digital widescreen format which blows the picture of 2 News away.

Sher, you said “We have a contract with them that includes WDTN. If they can break our contract then we should be able to break it also, without penalty.”

TWC won’t even allow you to complain, you can’t talk to a real person. We have a contract with them that includes WDTN. If they can break our contract then we should be able to break it also, without penalty. At this point I have no respect for CABLE TELEVISION, they took over and are nearly a monopoly. Look at what we PAY, we should be able to watch what we want. I don’t want a dish but that’s what they are forcing us to do to get Channel 2. Where can we protest Time Warner Cable’s standoff?

RE: “…Time Warner charges $10.00 for their basic local tier. Sounds like they could easily pay it without increasing rates.”

Remember, the $10.00 per month is for already existing costs, mainteance, and programming costs. If TWC says yes to Lin TV/WDTN’s demands, that would increase.

By K

October 8, 2008 11:12 AM | Link to this

WDTN is asking for around 30 cents per subscriber and Time Warner charges $10.00 for their basic local tier. Sounds like they could easily pay it without increasing rates. Either way, I’m switching to AT&T U-Verse once they offer it in my area.

“…TWC charges it’s customers to view local channels after using the local channel’s free signal.”

FWIW, TW charges around $10/mo for their most basic package. That includes approx 25 channels, including all of the local channels. TW could argue they’re providing you a service by getting these channels to you. See below…

“Why should TWC cable make us pay for something we can watch for free with an antenna??”

You certainly have that option. Why not take it ?

By TheTruth

October 8, 2008 10:26 AM | Link to this

WDTN and Lin TV are compensated fairly for the simple fact that if WDTN is on Time Warner Cable, WDTN can be seen by people at MUCH farther distances AND with a clear picture compared to the distance and picture quality received with a basic antenna. With an expanded audience that reaches way into Indiana, WDTN can and should charge ad buyers more because of the expanded viewing audience. Time Warner Cable does not owe anything to WDTN… Time Warner Cable is/was doing WDTN a big favor already!

By TheTruth

October 8, 2008 10:26 AM | Link to this

Actually what you pay for is a MUCH clearer picture compared to an analog antenna reception and some pay services that the cable company MUST take in order to receive other channels… For example, Shop NBC and QVC. Typically, in order to have USA and Sci-Fi on a cable system, the cable company would also HAVE to take Shop NBC in order to receive the other stations. The $8-$14 per month you pay for on the limited cable channels 2-24 is basically small network charges and to keep maintenance up.

By JACK

October 8, 2008 10:21 AM | Link to this

Does channel 7 and 45 (3) receive money from TWC for broadcasting their channels? Is this new ground for channel 2? Haven’t read or heard about those 2 contracts.

By Adam

October 8, 2008 10:15 AM | Link to this

Losing a local channel is a big deal. We do have choices but Sunday Night Football is broadcast on that channel! Now, I have to connect rabbit ears to my HDTV and I get hardly any reception at all.

By TWC sucks

October 8, 2008 10:10 AM | Link to this

The whole problem with this is that TWC charges it’s customers to view local channels after using the local channel’s free signal. Why should TWC cable make us pay for something we can watch for free with an antenna?? Because TWC is greedy and is making a profit off a signal they use for free. WDTN should stand their ground. WDNT should be compensated or TWC shouldn’t charge us for a local channel they aren’t paying for.

By LMJameson

We watch CW at 10 pm for the WDTN news. Otherwise we have been watching WHIO for news and weather. The big problem is other NBC shows that we want to watch but can’t while the negotiations are in process.

We are thinking of keeping Roadrunner and switching to Dish for our television viewing.

We also have the cheapest basic cable and have been watching HBO Family more than we did WDTN. If there was no local coverage, it could be a problem but since we still have 7 and 22/45, no big deal. Doesn’t NBC= NoBody Cares?

By amy

Mr Gil: You can still have RoadRunner by itself if you switch to DirecTV or Dish Network. As for DSL’s speeds, AT&T offers 6Mb/s service compared to RR’s 7-10Mb/s. I assure you, you can’t feel a difference. In fact, we went from RR’s 5Mb/s service down to ATT’s 3Mb/s and no one in the house noticed anything different.

This whole thing boils down to one thing: GREED. I watch very little on channel 2 because they offer he least in programming anyway. I know they are loosing viewers, advertising dollars, revenue. They deserve it. I hope Time Warner stands pat. If they cave in, we will see all the other networks and station follow right behind. This will translate in higher cable TV rates for sure. Time Warner is already way to high. Be patient, channel 2 will blink first.
