The primary business tax in Ohio is the Commercial Activity Tax, or the CAT.
What is the CAT? According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, the CAT is an annual tax measured by taxable gross receipts from most business activities.
What businesses have to pay the CAT? Almost every business that has taxable gross receipts of more than $150,000 a year - including retail, wholesale, service and manufacturing businesses. Who doesn't have to pay the CAT? Nonprofits, most governmental agencies, financial institutions, insurance companies and businesses with less than $150,000 of taxable gross receipts.
