DETROIT —

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan has told a Detroit church audience that African Americans should pool their money and buy up property as a way to save the city.

The Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/16ndNX7 ) says Farrakhan addressed about 250 people Thursday at New Destiny Christian Fellowship Church, one day before his scheduled appearance before the Detroit City Council.

The leader of the Chicago-based movement says Christian ministers shouldn't compromise in their opposition to gay marriage. He says there should be unity between Christians and Muslims because both faiths revere Jesus.

He also says he isn't anti-Semitic, citing the fact he's "never been arrested, not even for spitting on a sidewalk" and has never defaced a synagogue.

Farrakhan has drawn criticism in the past for calling Judaism a "gutter religion."
