New effort begins for Cape Girardeau fireworks

The Associated Press

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. —

There is still hope that the southeast Missouri town of Cape Girardeau will have its Fourth of July fireworks show.

The city stopped funding the fireworks in 2009 due to budget constraints, and for the past three years the Trail of Tears chapter of USA Veterans took over. The chapter announced in February that its own lack of finances would bring an end to the fireworks display.

The Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/162iB3a ) reports that another chapter of USA Veterans, the Headquarters chapter, is organizing an effort to fund a display. Organizer Rodger Brown says at least $12,000 will need to be raised.
